gary.l 61
Hi all could anyone tell me the difference between a polecat and a greyhound ferret. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
Polecat = polecat color (black mask). Greyhound - highly debated in existence but generally agreed to be long, lean, roached back and generally albino. Quote Link to post

Rake aboot 4,936
Polecat is the dark colouring of a ferret which is almost the same as that on the european polecat, slightly lighter though. Greyhound ferrets are what some people call a particular type of ferret. thin bodied with longer legs ?? maybe, To be honest I dont go for all that ,micro, greyhound malarky. A ferrets a ferret to me , just different colours and sizes Quote Link to post

Rake aboot 4,936
Really ? What makes them harder.? Do you have any pics or know any breeders.? Find it strange that a ferret bred to be skinny and small would be harder on rats. Have you ever ferreted rats,, The bigger the ferret the better in my view, cause they need to be hard as nails to go up against a big doe !! Like I said, I don`t believe that "greyhound ferrets"are any different,,,they are just wee ferrets that have picked up a local name for a small type. Same as all the daft names for colours! ATB iv ferreted loads a rats, an i have found a ferret over sized is not much cop, seen more big hobs an jills jack than the smaller yins, an when i say smaller i dont mean micro/greyhound, i just mean a nice slim sized worrkin hob/jill i cannae offer any explanation of why this happens, but my own personal thoughts are down to the ferret being able to move better when meeting a fiesty rat head to head underground Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
Magwitch has what i would term as greyhounds, more just a body type than anything else, but of course like anything, they will breed to type if you work at it. Big ferrets cant fit down rat holes, and very small ones get a kicking, so long, slim and tough works best, thats the logic anyhow. I got one that folk might call a greyhound here, but then her sister is a stumpy wee polecat headcase so that throws it all out the windae. Quote Link to post
martnmagik 68
i have a very small jill, and untill recently have just thought she was a regular although small ferret, and some one said to me where did you get your "greyhound" i have never heard of them being called this. ive heard small ferrets being called "pencil" ferrets are these the same thing? The one 8,579
Now days i would just say a greyhound ferret is a lean type of ferret i dont think there a breed .and polecats just a colour of ferret Quote Link to post
takman511 42
when i was a young un all the old timers called the albino`s greyhounds no matter of size or shape Quote Link to post
web22 27
from what i've heard they are longer legged, when you look at one you will easily see through the gap between the belly and ground, but i could be way off... Quote Link to post
fresh earth 47
Young lad i ferret with has about a dozen of them of simular breeding to my standard sized ferrets only difference is his only get fed when he can be arsed so there half the size and weight of mine and whether its down to them being fed a bit less there for needing to fight a bit harder in general either way they do seem alot less tolerent of other ferrets than my ones are and will kill strange ferrets and there also wicked little sods on the rats . Greyhounds are just classed due to size totaly agree with the above. Quote Link to post
