My mum's dog was poorly, one day he was ok, the next he wouldn't get up! Mum was hand feeding him & giving him water. She took him to the vet, where they done a blood test, and temperature check, the vet concluded he had a bug, so he prescribed some medication, and gave him and injection to bring his temperature down. Mum was sent away with her dog. As the days went by, he seemed to be recovering, he was getting up, gradully walking further and further, then next thing we know, he was even worse than ever and was yelping when he moved. Mum took him back to the vet, where they took xrays and carried out further tests, the vet again said there is nothing wrong with her dog.

Again, mum went home, with an ever growing vet bill!

Mum's dog just got worse and worse, so she decided to ring the ve for advice, and asked the vet to come and put her dog to sleep. The vet was reluctant to come out and wanted to leave it till the following day, my mum was very distressed and the vet decided to come out, they agreed a price. The vet turnt up, and muzzled mum's dog, they gave him the injection, and nothing was happening, the vet said they cannot find a vain, so they kept giving mum's dog more injections. Mum's dog was in agony, screaming, crying! and there was nothing anyone could do! This went on for 1 hour!! The vet said this was happening because they could not find a vain! I think this is terrible. Is there anyone I can report the vet too? I think my mum and her dog were treated terribly, the vet then had the cheek to say mum had to pay another £70 because he had to have an additional injection and be muzzled!

Sorry for long message . . . Any ideas where I can go from here ?

Please help :'(

You need to first take it up with the vets themselves, someone who is over the vets,

if its the same person who came out to your mums dog, then contact the BVA and put in a formal complaint.

http://www.bva.co.uk/

Personaly if that was my dog, the second they missed the vain

i would have told them to stop and contacted another vet to do the job

i certanaly wouldnt have let them carry on for an hour!

In the last year ive had 3 dogs pts by my vets, non were ever muzzled

and all were pts peacefully and with in seconds of the needle going in

even one who was screaming in pain, when i took her in

they found the vain with in seconds.

fidodido - yes there are some good vets out there, its just finding them

its one resion i stick with my vets, as although on some things they can be expencive

they are worth there weight in gold, and i trust them to do the best by my animals

they have never ripped me off and have let me off a few times with consult fees

even over christmas when i had to have one of my lads pts, they kept the vets open for me

and although they do charge for emergency appointments at 60 quid

i didnt have to pay that, just paid for pts and cremation.

that is truley appauling. When my boyfriends mother had her cocker put to sleep the dogs viens and capilary reflex were non exsistent (her heart had gone and so blood pressure was extremly low) yet the vet still found a vein the first time. If the vet had missed the vein he/she SHOULD NEVER continue to inject the fluid until they are 100% sure (usually done by drawing blood in to the syringe before injecting)

when i took my working collie bitch to be spayed, they didnt stitch her up properly, without my knowledge they used a newly qualified vet to do the surgery. she was very anaemic when i brought her home. few days later stiches split when she was outside for 10mins her intestines and liver were out on the ground, had to wrap her in a towel and bring her same vet again to pts. tried to charge me then for putting her down :censored:

only consolation is that i have her daughter.

I can image the vet was very lucky to escape a right hander.

that would be pretty much close to it, considered sueing him but it wouldnt bring the bitch back. she was worth a lot of money, couldnt do my usual seasonal lambing relief work without her as its a 2man job without a dog.

Mabie it would be worth something on this board about what vets people use and what they are like,

bit of a distance from you - if you are in rotherham, but then again a good vet is worth the travel for.

list of some recomended vets in halifax.

Thanks for a quick response, I didn't think I would have replies that quick :). My mum wanted it to be over quickly, but where we live everything goes into lockdown at 5oclock so to call another vet out she was unsure of how long that would have taken. I am defo taking it further, thanks for all the advice, I feel a bit better knowing it's not just us that have experienced problems. I have never experienced this before, so I was unsure if it was bad vet practice or whether it was a common incident. I wanted to get my facts/rights straight before storming into the vets, I did feel it was bad practice. This vet is in Clacton, I do not want to name them incase they try and sue me for defamation of name or some crap.

Again thanks for all your help

Beanie

Some years ago.My dear old mum got a parrotCost her £500.So on my brothers advce she took it to the vet to have it chiped. This so called vet injected it into one it veins. The poor thing died. Then he had the balls to tell her he was not liable for its death.and would not be paying her any money. My old mum came home in tears.Nexts day he had a vist from my mum and three older brothers all ex army.Who had a nice chat with the man.Who had a change of mind.Wrote out a check for £700.See what can happen if you talk to people nicely.:whistling:

Now that sound like a plan! I have 2 brothers :) And a cheque would be nice for mum, ( I would not have paid in the 1st place for such a cock up) although it won't bring her dog back, she could put this money towards a nice plaque for him ect :)

Tell the prick you.ll be phoning the local paper.Pluz his insurance should cover it.
