mushroom 14,247
You'll be better doing what I did mate go out for about a year (at the very least) before getting a dog and learn the ropes off some sensible dog men. Try to get out with a couple of different lads (or lasses equal rights an all that ) so you'll see different methods at work Quote Link to post
artic 595
Hello NWH. Do you own a lurcher/dog? If not then there are many books on the market to choose from, like The House Lurcher, to Extreame Lurcher Work! I would recommend a book called Running Dog Maintenance, very good advice on treating your present/future dog for all the bumps, knocks, strains, bites, and cuts that it will take in it's working life, and not to mention feeding etc........ It's a good read full of interesting goodies! There's plenty of SENSIBLE advice within this site, you just need to sieve through it all. Take your time and do lots of research. Don't be afraid to ask any questions on this site, and ignore the numptys. The decent members will answer and guide you in the right direction. Quote Link to post
baw 4,360
this site if ye got the time an patience to do the searches am ask questions, along wae getting oot an learnin by yours an others mistakes is a far better option than any book Have you learned anything from being on here? All I have learned is how much shite folk talk. If you don't know anything about the sport, how are you supposed to seperate the bull from the truth? The only way to learn is from experience. Get a good book like the one artic mentions to teach you the basics but get out there and do it, it's really the only way. Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
Artic and dotty are right, get Penny Taylors book for sound advice, there is also a dvd by Dave Sleight called Purdys progress. very informative. Look at the sensible posts on the forum, go to shows and talk to folk and im sure you will find someone before next season who will take you out, just remember mate, do your research and slowly slowly catchy monkey... Simoman 110
For all his faults Plummers the complete lurcher is worth a read on basic training, if you want to read about real lurcherwork before the ban, get one of Darcys/Lloyds/Walshs books..... Quote Link to post
scothunter 12,609
rouges and running dogs lol Quote Link to post
lurcherterrierferret 2
I've got a Brian Plummer the Complete lurcher, not read it all yet, but have found it to be a good light hearted but informative read. I was also new to owning a lurcher, and got mine last year in the summer, I got this book after, but found my lurcher (1/4 collie, 1/4 bedlington and 1/2 whippet) easy to train, and a useful little man for both ratting and just getting him into rabbiting, been very close this year but will be holding off now til next season thanks to some advice from members on here. I agree with previous posts, you need to go out with someone experienced that works lurchers to get first hand experience. That's what i did and it really helped. Quote Link to post
