bill88 6
Just had to cull 2 of my rare breed hen's.I have been using a natural wormer on my hen's,but 2 of them got sickly over the weekend.I had a similar problem last year, and took one of the hen's to a vet.He told me it was a heavy infestation of worm's and gave me panacur and teramycin, problem sorted, but cost me thirty quid (22 pound for the consultation and eight pound for the medication).Phoned the same practice yesterday morning, and asked if i could buy the medication from them to treat the hen's that had the same symptoms,i was told "the vet cannot prescribe medication without a consultation",AND PEOPLE HAVE THE CHEEK TO SAY PEOPLE THAT HUNT ARE CRUEL? Guest Bigbob
First question our vet asks : Is it insured : all they care about is the pound in there pocket
Guest MOLLY
You have to think about it from the vets point of view. Firstly alot of medication cannot be sold by law (under licience) without them 1st seeing the animal, it has nothing to do with them, its the law. Just like a GP would'nt just give you medication without 1st seeing you, even repeat pescriptions when they know your condition have to be reviewed every so often. Because of todays sueing society, if vets sold medication and something went wrong....bet your ass someone would sue. Just being devils advocate MOLL.

Just being devils advocate MOLL. That's very true in some cases Moll. Thing is, a lot of vets bend this to their advantage. My practice tried to tell me that I had to pay for a consultation to buy Drontal for a pup. I asked them why this was practice policy when you can buy it freely in some human pharmacies, online, etc. They replied that it wasn't practice policy but law. I mentioned the revisions by RCVS et al. which very specifically state that Drontal (and now Frontline) can be supplied without prescription and without consultation with a veterinary surgeon. She still tried to insist so I asked for the practice manager. Cue the same discussion all over again! I ended up telling her that I wasn't about to pay £18 for a consultation just to buy £2 of worming tablet. If they didn't even know the law applicable to running a practice I wasn't sure I was willing to entrust them with my animals' care, so would seek Drontal elsewhere online (legally). She ended up saying that if I was to insist on getting Drontal elsewhere I'd have to get a prescription from them at X cost. It only took me pointing out that, leaving aside the fact Drontal doesn't even require a prescription, charging for prescriptions was illegal now, for them to hurriedly invite me down to buy Drontal over the counter. Kay 3,709
Vets can no longer charge you for writing out a script, you can get it on line if its a pom providing you have the script, if the stuff you need is otc then just shop around Hope this helps, if the vet said you have to pay for a script then report them if it was recently becuase its not right you should be charged for one So i wonder how many people get conned into paying for a consultation when there animal is on some sort of on going medication, say for arthritus or something when all they need is a monthly supply, i wouldnt put up with that & if that were the case i would seek out the meds elsewhere Edited January 17, 2007 by ferretlove
Guest baldie
My vets wont sell you drontal, unless your animal is registered with them [the b*****ds] There are several sites to buy online, and usually from the states, you can buy all your usual painkillers , antibiotics etc from them, without a prescription, because they are outside the UK.You usually have to buy in bulk [but you want to anyway, to keep down the cost] and they arent much cheaper than a vet, BUT, you arent paying £20 every time you need painkiller, or antibiotics etc.
Guest alastair
my vet is not bad, they are thier 24hrs a day working,so u got no need to wake them up and wait for them, and the vet lets me take painkillers in case of accidents later on ,but only with a consultatoin which i get for innoculations anyway ,so i just stock up then, but recently i get it all from my bro who works away by the post Edited January 17, 2007 by alastair
jasper65 6
I have been getting the 10% Panacure from this place for years now over the counter for around £15 for a 100ML bottle, with this strength it works out a dosage of about <1ML Per Kilogram for the birds>, you just have to get the calculator out if its over or under to work out the dosage , if you contact them I'm sure they'll bang a bottle over through the post... http://www.bearts.co.uk/index.htm
