good advice tomo , i never double a pup up when it starts lamping it will click if you give it the right chances make sure it catches !! worked for me over 40 years

dont know how your dogs bond is with you pal but i trained mine with a ball to fetch back and when out catcing stuff i just let her bring stuff back and then let her carry it instead if taking it off her straight away ,,, maybe coincidence mate but she has never failed since and always works hard to please

spot on the last bit it cam make them come in alot closer, but some times the feckers drop rabbit back there, and if say in stubble you carnt find it. Feckin lurchers

Riohog: I've found that works with Saluki types. The more you call them the more they want to hang on to their catch: almost as though they are teasing you, getting the upper hand. If I call my big dog he literally goes in the opposite direction! If I ignore him completely he will bring it to hand, though never if there's other dogs present. He is really jealous and possessive.

 

A friend of mine who has worked Saluki types for many years despaired of getting his dogs to retrieve: he went out and bought a shock collar. Now most people would think that this would make the dog even worse, but he's a clever man and having initially conditioned his dogs to recall using the collar, especially on the lamp at night, he then used it to establish the retrieve. Just a tingle or the tone, and he was worried that it would stop the dogs catching, but their prey drive and possessiveness is so high that it worked fine and his dogs now retrieve on the lamp perfectly.

 

IMO this is a very dangerous course of action to take, and in any but the most experienced hands, a sure fire way of putting a dog off catching at all. But it worked for him: but he DID USE THE COLLAR TO ESTABLISH A GOOD RECALL FIRST. After all, a retrieve is just a recall with the dog carrying something in its mouth.
