my pups 4 month, it brings back a rabbit skin but drops short about a meter then looks for food reward, any ideas how to get it to drop it in my hand?

Couple of ways mate, take a step back as it comes in before it puts the dummy down, also teach it to hold the dummy on command, place the dummy into its mouth and hold it shut, saying hold, keep doing this til the penny drops, and it carries on command of hold, then start retrieving again, as it approaches give the command hold, let it stand holding the dummy, then give your command for release, and heaps loads of praise, make a real fuss, do this 3-4 times a day.

i never use a single skin or tennis ball or whatever i want the mutt to retrieve use 2 , that way the possessive element of its instinct wont kick in, he wants the skin and the grub, and thats the way the pups nature is,

,,throw 1 as soon as he lifts it get him excited bout the other one, that way hopefully he'll run up to you with the other item in his mouth, tease him for a few seconds with the second one

, he will drop the first one

, then throw the second , repeat this over weeks a little at a time, until you become the focus of attention not the skin ,,you will end up with a fast retrieve if he get to knows that running back to you will end in him getting to chase something again,,best of luck,

Dont let it run loose whilst learning hold, keep in on the lead, within reaching distance, if it can run off it will and it could ruin the retrieve, just let it carry on the lead on the command hold, then start retrieving and using the command hold on returning.Dont take the dummy off it straight away, let it hold, as it learns, get it to sit and hold. When mastered turn it back into a game of retrieve and wind it up before throwing it. Then control the final few yards of the retrieve.
