Teaching a dog to jump...or not?

Recommended Posts

like lurcherman sed dogs always tend to prefer to jump over solid i.e a wall rather than fence if my bitch trys sticking her head threw in sted of jumping i put me jacket over the fence and then tell her up and tap me jacket she will fly over and the jacket protects her from barbed wier

This is how i started mine off.I used to put a small barrier at the back door when he was around 8 months, and put his food on the other side of it. Slowly increasing the height. Then when he was around 1 yr introduced him to wooden fences and slowly introduced him to wire(not barbed) My other dog which is a 27" Saluki/Grey/Deer/Whippet jumps fences for fun  I had some heart in the mouth moments when my young dog would attempt to follow him over a high barbed wire fence    and i would stop him at the last moment. Well one day it happened i lost sight of him and then heard the BIG yelp, got to the dog and he had hung himself on the fence by his rear leg :icon_eek: :icon_eek:eventually got him loose and calmed him down. After that he didnt attempt to jump anything(dont blame him) There are a lot of fences where i take my dogs so jumping is a must. So went back to basics and within a short period he was jumping again. To cut a long story short, put the effort in be patient and you will reap the rewards. He has had a few scrapes since but never been caught up. He is now just over 3yrs and is very confident at jumping gates, wire and barbed wire.
