ArchieHood 3,692
The first Supertens were sold with a steel bottle with rounded base, these should no longer be used and anyone with this type of bottle should replace it with a new aluminium bottle. Aluminium bottles without a PI * mark on them should be tested after five years of date of manufacture, bottles with the π mark should be tested after ten years. For details of how to have a bottle tested contact Luxfer Gases +44 (0)115 980 3800 or Midland Diving Centre +44 (0)116 212 4262. Quote Link to post

Had it in the gun shop on wednesday and he charged it for me, no worries. Edited December 13, 2010 by millsy44 Quote Link to post

Phantom 631
I thought it was only the dive bottles that required testing every five years? The ones that are marked for "Surface Use Only" have a 10 year test cert? A buddy bottle on a rifle would be Surface use only? Phantom Quote Link to post

I think ill leave it as it is, and if bob (owner of the local gunshop) still wants to fill it for me then i wont argue If he says it needs testing, then itll get tested cheers lads Quote Link to post
DIVERD 34
The previous replies are correct, the 1987 is the date of the BS standard applied to the bottle. The bottle on you gun is an aluminium one, we can tell by the BS standard applied to it (5045 pt 6) and also because it has a flat base. Steel ones have a rounded base. Yours was made in 09/2002. However, testing this is easy, i bet a magnet will not stick to it! These cylinders do not require a pressure test. They are below the legal limit in size if they are 0.7 ltr. This has been debated many times over they years in the scuba industry, and even there there is still discussion. I contacted a number of test houses, the DOT and home office testing over the years and the bottom line i think is/was (i sold my scuba and field sports store a few years ago, so may be out of date) that the cylinder does not require a test, however the filling centre can refuse to fill it if you do not comply with their risk assessment and rules, and this can involve a costly and very profitable test. So if your local shop says it needs a test, then if they are going to fill it, it does! If they do not require it then dont worry. Larger cylinders, over 0.8lrt/ 200bar if i remember the standards correctly always require a test. You should never complain about testing these things. Think about the energy it imparts on a pellet, and how many times it can do it. On these cylinders the weak point is the neck threads, as the brass/chrome valve and aluminium can galvanically corrode, though in most cases in needs salt water to do so. If the valve comes out in the back of your car because it has heated up in the sun, thus increasing the pressure inside, it will really spoil your day. We had a cylinder lose its valve in the shop many years ago, and it wrecked the place, damaging a huge ammount of stock and kit. Hope this helps D Edited December 13, 2010 by DIVERD Quote Link to post
