minion 29
Was having a chat about various lurcher crosses with a guy today who assures me his lurcher is 1/4 greyhound , 1/4 whippet , 1 /4 collie , 1/4 salluki because the sire was a collie grey and the dam was a saluki whippet. Now, its been 12 or 13 years since I was at school but as far as I am aware genetics are not that simple. For example, if you take that litter above are you really getting a 1/4 of each breed? or if there are say 8 pups could you end up with a very mixed litter? Potentially you could end up with a pup that is equal to a collie / saluki half cross? I may be totally off the mark but has anyone bred a litter of half cross (anything) to another half cross and kept tabs on all the pups? Were they balanced or did they end up all over the place? Would be interested to read folks views. At the end of the day, my view is that providing the dogs does its job the breeding doesn't come into it but if I saw an add for a litter of say collie grey x saluki grey I would be unsure what to expect. DottyDoo 500
yer right mate, a litter of lurchers aint all the same, some throw 1 way, others throw the other Quote Link to post
minion 29
I remember reading that if you have a genuine half cross and put a greyhound over it the litter will usually be pretty even. Think I would be really disappointed if I bought a lurcher thinking I was getting a mixture of what sounds like a great dog on paper and ended up with the equivalent of a collie x saluki. I suppose it is really down the the breeder to think about it before they breed the litter and be honest with the advert. Cheers Quote Link to post

Gaz_1989 9,539
This is very interesting. The bloke I had my pup off has kept tabs on most, I think we know of at least 4 locally. But the sire and dam aren't worlds apart so not the best of circumstances for what is being discussed here. I suppose the fact that some litters throw smooth and some throw rough is a good indicator that genetics vary alot in one litter. And surely if they vary in looks then they can vary in other areas? Prey drive, intelligence, stamina? Etc. Gaz Quote Link to post
awen 29
surely the only way you know what your really getting is to get a line-bred dog? anything else is just hit or miss you can never guarantee its going to work! Quote Link to post
