pcp advice required

I would like some advice regarding buying a pcp airgun.I have been offered an air arms s410 k from a youngster living by me but when i went to try the gun there is no air registered on the gauge.The boy said that he had not used it for a while.Is this correct or does it mean there may be a leak on the air system as i would think there should always be some air left showing on the gauge.Also some evidence of surface rust on barrel.Is this easy ,or costly to remove.and what would be the best process.Thanks for any help.

unless the guy has run it completely empty there should still be some pressure left in it. Ask him to charge it for you, ideally with you present, and have a listen for leaks. If it is leaking you'll need to renew the seals. Not sure how much it would cost to get the barrel sorted. By the sounds of it he hasnt looked after it that well-if the outside has signs of rust more than likely the bore will be the same

Got to agree with Fox buddy ,

 

All sounds a little iffy to me.

 

Maybe worth giving the young lad the benefit of doubt though mate and getting him to pump it up for you. He may well just of run it down and not had the money to or time to get it pumped up.

 

Rust doesn’t cost much to remove and the barrel is easy enough to clean.

If its only surface rust, the a tip I have used that I picked up on here was a rub down with a scrunched up bit of foil then a wipe down and a final wipe with an oily rag!

Worked very well

 

As for Air Pressure, it may have a leak or he may have just let it go below the 'holding pressure'. With most air arms models (and a few others as well) if the pressure gets below a certain number, then it will not hold the valve closed and it will then vent the remaining air

 

It does not take long to pump it up from scratch (even less with a bottle) just be sure to open the bolt so the air you pump in does not go out the other end!

Maybe one of the regulars on here lives near you and could give you some first hand advice!

 

There's nothing worse than getting advice off a forum, going to buy whatever it may be and being disappointed.

I'm sure for a small fee your local gunsmith will charge it and give it a quick once over and everything will be fine

hi buddy

get him to take it to a gun shop to get re-filled,and make sure he cocks it first! other wise it will not fill

 

then go round and have a go on it at least 3 mags,if ya happy with it and no leaking air,then buy it.

 

the rust is easy to re-move if its slight rust,if its pitted on the cylinder/barrel then my advise would be most importantly to change the cylinder! the barrel can be sorted
