Phantom 631
I was supposed to be going out last night to the cemetery around 11-11:30 with a mate of mine, I've mentioned him on here before. Now the problem with him is that 1/ he talks a lot, 2/ he will happily light up a fag, 3 he goes a little overboard with the deoderant/aftershave. As well as that he's only ever fired a rifle a couple of times. Don't get me wrong, this guy is a gem to have as a friend and I have known him for about 19 years and he's a good laugh and he will do anything for anyone if he can the only thing really wrong with him is that he wants to jump straight in head first and hopes to knock over bunnies at 100 yards simply by putting the crosshair in the general direction of the bunny even though the scope and rifle is Zerod at 35 yards. I've told him time and time again, that if he comes round during a day, I'll take him out and teach him to shoot, but he only ever comes around late at night The last shot he was "Sure I can do it" was at a bunny (but please don't tell him there wasn't a pellet in the breech) and no matter how many times I tell him to follow through and leave the crosshair on the mark does he pull the gun down from his eye while the pellet is still in lock time! At that range, I have no doubt that he could have hit the bunny, but the chances of it running away wounded were too high for my liking, hence the lack of pellet in the breech when I "loaded" it for him. I'm hoping he will listen to me and come round one day to the idea he must punch paper before I actually let him loose with a loaded gun at the quarry. Anyways, I digress (Again)! I got to the cemetery and after dismantling the rifle to shift some spots of rust earlier, I spent a little time zeroing until I was putting pellet on pellet again. I then had a wander around the cemetery looking for ferret food. Got to the far end in the old section ready to climb over the fence and go into the paddock when my phone rang, it was Si. We had a little chat and he told me he was off to the pub with a few comrades Lucky sod!!, I'd rather have been in a nice worm pub than out there in the freezing cold . Anyways I continued into the paddock, wandered around the perimiter a few times and the only three sets of Jewels I saw belonged to the Mare and her Fole and a Fox I saw late on. I then went back into the cemetery and spent another couple of hours sneaking round there and back into the paddock I also checked Bunny Land numerous times as well. I was out until 11pm when I text my mate to say, not seen a single bunny and I was off home rather disheartened but he was still welcome to pop round and have a natter if he wanted to. When I think about it in hindsight, everything was against me last night. The bright full Moon, the direction of the wind and then the lack of wind, Myxie on the paddock and of course Charlie and the Owls that were out. No wonder I blanked I think I'll have another try tonight and see if I do any good As I left the paddock I said out loud, "You live, to die another day fluffy" that was the only consolation of the nights efforts. So the moral's of the story, KEEP TRYING! and DONT let newbies loose on quarry until they are proficient on paper! Phantom Quote Link to post
davyt63 1,845
hi tony its the right way to go about it,i went over to a hft course today and met up with nightwish although we were having some fun,i did tell him that this was a test to see how well his shooting was. if i am to take him out with me & chaz which he did not mind and to be fair he hit shots i missed so in my book thats good for me,but still has to get more practise in before live quarry taken and a nice bloke to boot regards davy Quote Link to post
Marksman 934
:clapper: Nice one Tony.... Theres a few of "I have got a rifle and I'm going to kill something" and "Oh!... I can hit that no problem" people about very lately. As long as the guy doesnt want to listen to you mate I'd continue doing what ya doing. I mean you said you never loaded the rifle....did the guy even ask or wonder why he missed?? If not it says it all really! Darryl Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
Hi Tony, It just sounds like the fellow needs mentoring buddy. I’m sure after a few times out with you he will pick up the real art of shooting and watching you will inspire him to get better and learn more mate. I have a son who sounds just like him, my Dylan who is soon to be 10. I remember though after some teaching the look on his face as he got his first 10 metre kill on feather (brilliant). I was so proud of him. ATB Si Edited October 24, 2010 by zini Quote Link to post
Phantom 631
Hey there Si I bet you were, I would have been too Unfortunately I cant mentor him or teach him until he decides he needs to learn. Until then, I'll just have to hope he doesn't notice the difference in sound between when I fire and when he fires Im more than happy to teach him to shoot Phantom Quote Link to post
