First cross Collie greyhound?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

This question, is aimed at people, who have bred a litter of first cross collie greyhounds, out of well selected parents.

How, in your experience, does the whole litter turn out?

You only usually hear of one or 2 making the grade ect, but not how the rest turn out?

Thanks.

i would say that if the pups had enough training and practise then they prob all work well enough .like the last reply it depends on the owner and how mutch experience they get.

bred from a ex, working hill collie bitch, to a very good coursing greyhound dog, average litter of of pups,= 7 maybe 2 or 3 would make the grade for single handed, all round workers, craft, speed, stamina, the rest would make rabbit dogs, setting holes, working the rough, etc,but would all make good Lamping dogs, especially for rabbits, I am talking back in the 60s before the introduction of the Saluki, blood, in those days, the first cross, was believed to be a better dog than the 3/4 grey/1/4 collie more stamina, and a more robust dog, better feet, but for me most just lacked that little bit of speed, the best cross of that type of breed I had was a 3/4 bred dog, mated to a first cross bitch, I received a dog pup from that, litter, and he was just a natural, stood 26" good long back, and he could strike like a viper, for me the collie cross, is a good hunting dog, add a little Saluki, into that mix, and you have, some thing special, that's for edible game, nose, speed, stamina, retrieving shot game, No Problem,

The saluki blood in this cross imho reduces the muscle mass that occurs in 3 quarter grey collies thus produceing a dog more agile and stamina packed.I have owned one f1x collie/grey and also seen loads more and imo they are not the finished product as far as good all round lurchers go but the male speciemens of this cross i have noticed always had the edge on the females due to being bigger and stronger.

it all boils down 2 the trainer,is has nothing 2 with breeding ,of course a good match give it the pups a good bloodline, the question was how many pups make the grade?and all depends on is how many decent dog men get a pup and bring on proberly and train it well, and then at the same time WHAT IS THE GRADE, 2 me if the dog owner is happy with their dog hunting capibilities and he makes the owner happy then all that matter, people have different standards ever body has their own bench mark

Some interesting replys and thanks for that.

As for saluki, how much is just right, in a collie greyhound mix?

Would it be ok to cross a first cross collie greyhound say, to a well bred saluki lurcher?

Thanks.

for me I would say 3/4 grey/1/4 collie bitch who is doing her job well, then you put a good saluki/ grey, dog on top, and you should have pups

that could make all rounders single handed dogs for Edible game, some thing that has the speed to get up to there quarry, and can change gears,

when there up there and finish the job as quick as possible, but still have all the stamina that is required for more running, and quick recovery, breeding is and always will be, PUT THE BEST TO THE BEST, AND YOU HOPE FOR THE BEST, but sadly there is No guarantees on that,

I agree with you Poacher, collie x deer hound x, make very handy dogs and then some will put a bit of bedlington, in them but for my type of running when was in Law, for Hare and deer, and the ground we used to run on average 20acre, fields high fences, all round it was hard to get away from that good ole collie x and if you add that saluki blood, in my opinion, I have the Dog that suits my type of land, so it depends the type of ground you are running on, what you are wanting out of your dog, my type to hunt the field on his own, do his job and carry back to hand, obvious, the big stuff he can not retrieve, as for the Grade, all my dogs had to be able to take a hare in daylight, single handed, (( when in Law,)))) a rabbit dog was of no use to me,
