This morning's effort

Recommended Posts

Hi all, haven't been that active of late (either on here or with my rifles), but had a chance to get out and have a quick look round a small bit of permission first thing this morning.

It's only a couple of acres of what used to be horse paddocks, but the chap who lives there now has turned it into ornamental gardens. Definitely not what I'd have chosen to do with such a lovely place, but you may your money and take your choice, so they say!

It used to be absolutely teeming with rabbits, 24 hours a day, but steadily over last year I thinned them out with my rifle and ferrets. At the tail end of last summer, the owner rabbit fenced around the paddock that always produced the biggest hauls, much to my dismay, and since then, you've had to be there at the crack of dawn to even see a bunny.

Set my alarm for 5.30, with the permission being about 45 minutes away. Typically, I woke up early, and was out of the house by 5.45, which meant I arrived while it was still pitch dark. I should have just sat in the van until the sun started to rise, but ever eager, I had a mooch in the dark, hopeful that I might be able to ambush some unsuspecting rabbits.

I made use of a bench in the garden to watch the sunrise, and at first light got my first sight of a rabbit. Sadly though, it was the other side of my boundary, so I had to let it be. I decided to have a mooch, and as I walked around the house, a large doe rabbit ran straight into the garden, and stopped, at about 20 yards. With one mil-dot of hold-under, I sent a .22 Accupell on its way from my R10. The loud crack indicated a clean headshot- although the bunny had other ideas, running in quite a large circle for about 15 seconds before dropping.

I had a bit more of mooch, but didn't see much else, so with rabbit paunched, I was on my way.

I managed to bag a couple of collared doves later at a different location- no pics of them, but I'm happy with my day's bag!

Thanks for reading- I know it's a long post for a small bag!!
