skycat 6,174
Ruuning whilst on heat isn't too bad, its afterwards when her body thinks it might be pregnant and lays down fat round internal organs, mammary glands etc. I've found that most bitches, if fit and lean at the start of their season, run OK for about a month after the season has finished. After that I stop any fast work until 6 weeks later. Bearing in mind that a real pregnancy lasts 9 weeks, if you work from the middle of the bitch's season to between 10 and 12 weeks after that date, then start getting them fit again. I don't lay mine off completely, just no hard night's lamping or coursing: just mooching and ferreting (with nets). A lot of bitches lost the power in their muscles during the time after a season, and are more likely to damage their muscles if you try and run them hard. Quote Link to post

adamb20 22
my bitch is full of water at the moment, she is a 6 month bitch and i am going to have to get some season supressent after this as by the time she is nearly back to fitness she breaks down again and it doesnt half fettle her. she swells up like a labrador and struggles to jump five bar gates. she struggles to get on to terms with lamped rabbits even and just jacks. its so sad to watch her not being able to work propperly and i can see her getting disheartened. she gets so bad that last time i thought there was no way she would get back from it but people on here said she would and sure eneogh she did, just to break shortly after. she looses all muscle tone, tires easier and looses a lot of pace. my mates bitch doesnt get like this so i take it it affects bitches differently. fresh earth 47
Money for xmas ... Hope thats a joke ! If she is 2 weeks in mate 14 days she should be running clear buy now . Above remarks spot on if she is a 6 month break and thats causing a problem and you dont intend breeding her in future i would go get her the jag pal means she wont break down meaning you get a chance to work her thats how the greyhound men do it . Although alot are against it and it can cause trouble later as some dont come back in heat if on the jag for prolonged periods of time. But if i were in your shoes and wanted the chance to get her fully fit and working for a decent length of time thats what id do jag her . regards kris. Quote Link to post
