ive got an old ms210 an its ideal for medium sized trees, elm hazel thorn etc. Im after a bigger saw now, about 18" - 20". I might try a husky, my uncle swears by them.

stihl v husky is a debate that will never end lol i personally prefer stihl as its all i ever used for years!! the next saw i buy will be a ms440

I bought cheap several year's back which was a ryobi with a 14inbar at the time it was only for domestic use which done ok to start with..it could not take much hammer and if i add to total hour's up that it got used it would of been around 2mth solid..after that the bar wore out and then it ripped all the teeth of the sprocket..so i binned it and bought a MS271 with a 18in bar..it's by far supirior to all the one's i have used..which include's 4 different sized husky's..dont get me wrong the husky's cut with power and run smothly but they are a pain in the arse to get started and use bucket load's of petrol compard to the newer stihl's.

very true!!! all the tree surgeons and forestry companys i know in sweden only use stihl and as huskys are made over there i think that speaks volumes!! did you get that stump out in the end??

Right using a top handle saw on the ground is just not needed if the guy who is using the saw full time on the ground cuttting logs branches is pure maddness as a proper saw is more usable.

The reason top handle saws are restricted is stop guys like this guy getting hold of saws like this also if he paid the money he has stated for a brand new STIHL top handle saw it must be stolen FACT .

I prefer to use a 017 in tree over 192 or 200t as it better balanced that a top handled saw .

Get it on EBAY if it not hot and get a better balanced saw like a MS170/180

Cheers Cookie

Its not safer 40ft up a tree like a gun the most dangerous part of the setup is the user or shooter .

Like said the buyer of a top handle saw has undergone unless your a cowboy setup the cs31/32 basic training then the correct training for use of a chainsaw in a tree .which make a diffrents to how to handle a top handle saw and gives the trained person a better understanding of the inherant added dangers on top handle saw.

Still if you boys want to use one crack on and look like this.

got to agree with you...

The way in which you hold a top handled saw restricts the control you have over kickback control... very dangerous if you dont know what your doing...

did that happen with a top handle??? but yeah i guess your right and i shouldnt be promoting there use to the untrained!!! they are dangerous and can kill you so only use ANY chainsaw if you have been given proper training
