Guest The Shaman
When out patrolling the Company's fenceline the other day I was gutted to find 4 or 5 hobs/gills discarded in a black bin liner over our fence . Theres an estate on the other side - council estate - and before anyone rags me to death I'm born and bred council estate and proud of it But for fecks sake these poor creatures had probably been neglected and starved Theres some people on this site who consider theier working partners part of the family, it seems that not all people are so loyal Quote Link to post

COMPO 54
WELL LADS , TO BE HONEST ........... I THINK WE ARE " ALL " TO BLAME FOR UNDER PRICEING AN ANIMAL THAT IN A LOT OF DAYTIME CONDITIONS CAN PUT MORE CONEYS IN THE BAG THAN A LURCHER !! IAM SURE IF THEY WERE WORTH £ 25 A PIECE THEY WOULDNT BE SO QUICK IN DISCARDING THE POOR FECKERS THE FERRETS TRUELY AN UNDERATED ANIMAL DUCKWING very true...i often read ferreting threads about how well the dog worked there would be no ferreting without the ferts...they are under rated, a few years ago i was contemplating getting a running dog, as i had increased the amount of land i could ferret and have a ready market for upto 40 rabbits a week anyway i decided that another two ferts would be a better option, they cost less, they eat less, they dont need yearly boosters, they take up less space and they dont make as much mess and they account for a lot more rabbits than any single dog could and they dont even slightly bruise the meat there are still too many litters bred every year, a ferret lasts years, why breed replacements every year, a litter every 4 years should replace any retirements/deaths...if less were bred...less would be available and the price would rise... this is not a slight at all travellers....an old boy i know through ferreting was telling he me he was at melton mowbray market and there were ferrets being auctioned along with all the other small animals, a gypsy (p***y was his exact word) bought 4 ferrets and a load of old purse nets...my old mate being a ferreting kind of guy spoke with the gypsy in passing.....a week later he saw the same man and asked "how did you get on with the ferrets?" the reply "no good...no fecking good at all, took them out and they didn't do any good...so i left the fecking lot and the nets in the field ".......he had netted up and after 10 minutes didn't have loads of rabbits bolting so decided the ferrets were no good and walked leaving even the nets over the holes and the ferrets working below ground suffice to say my old mate told him what he thought of him and walked away :11: Quote Link to post
Ron Weasley 83
That's f*****g sickening. I agree with what you say about breeding Compo, it seems that everyone, on these boards as well as elsewhere want to breed every time they have a jill come into season. It's totally unneccessary. Every year, hundreds of unwanted kits are taken in by organisations like the Ferret Welfare Society, and thousands more are probably abandoned, or sold to clueless idiots for £1. Not really that fair is it? It's like breeding from your dogs for profit - just without the profit. Quote Link to post
Ricky-N.p.p 0
I agree !!! I lined 2 of my jills last year but before they where lined i had 19 of them spoken for there was 4 out of the litters that didnt have homes to go to and i was asked by a younglad if he could buy them i said i would give him 2 for free but when i saw the condition he kept his ferret in i told him to feck aff !! he had 1 hob polecat in a hutch on its own upto its knees in shit !!!! I think someone stole the hob a few days later....what a shame ay ?? any way all the kits went to good homes in the end and they are all workin !! My youngest brother of 8 yrs old is now learning the trade and has 2 jills and a vacinated hob so he doesnt need to worry about litters of young untill he needs to Quote Link to post
Ron Weasley 83
Surely if people started charging £25 for a ferret these people would breed even more litters just for the money. We dont need sick people like this in our sport . Joe I can see your point Joe, but the theory behind the it is that many people only buy ferrets because they are so cheap, and so readily availiable. Too many people are willing to let anyone who crosses their palms with a few coins walk away with their kits, and in too many cases, these people have decided on the spur of the moment that they want ferrets. blackdug 90
i have had to liberate a few ferrets over the years from total tosspots,up to there knees in crap and dog food..sadlly these people will always be about ,,my local ferret rescue has close to 50 unwanted ferrets,,sad the lady who runs it is really reluctant to rehouse any to hunting homes as she says we just keep them caged up and in general mistreat them,,would have liked to disagree with her but this lady has seen it all ,,and on my last visit she had forked out 150 quid of her own money on a old hob that had been chewed up by a fox ,,it just the case of to many people out there who do not know how to look after animals Quote Link to post
Ron Weasley 83
I'm a bit more lucky with my local ferret welfare society, as the main man is big on his working, and like most of us on here, it was working that attracted him to ferrets in the first place. Thats not to say he doesn't show his ferrets now, or race them, but his roots lie in our sport! Quote Link to post
Ricky-N.p.p 0
Black dug i think the lady is living in the past yes there are sill some arseh*les that dont look after there working ferrets but its a minority !! Just have alook at the thread on here about ferret hutches and you will see the conditions that modern day hunters keep there ferrets...some of them are really something Quote Link to post
