markha 99
Something that "Marksman" said in a post about estimating that he paced one metre made me think about pacing, something I know a lot about and Im very accurate at doing, its to do with my job as a mountain guide. I have a 32" inside leg and an average natural walking stride. My pace count for 100m dead (accuracy of about 6") is 72 paces. Now, the way you pace out distance in meteres is not by counting every foot step; You count every other footstep. The lowest pace count I have come across with clients is 62 paces, or a very long stride, those who are shorter in the leg and females can be up to around 83 paces, or short strides. Try it out in the field, set up a known starting point and then an accurately measured 100m finish and then just walk from point to point at your normal walking speed and gait, count everytime your left or right foot hits the ground, that will be your pace count for 100m. Its just a matter of division to work out different distances. This could be a good way for those without a laser range finder to start to learn about judging distance across varying terrain, having paced out different distances and remembering what things look like at that distance, its a lot easier than trying to remember the measurements on your millscope for working out distance. Phantom 631
SPA for that one Mark The reason for that is, that you just reminded me that I was taught that method (and totally forgot about it) when I used to do a lot of hill & mountain walking in the Lakes, Snowdonia and Isle of Sky. We were taught to grab a set nunmber of pebbles and put them in our pocket and then chuck one away after every 100 or 500 meters so we could use it as a guide with the OS Maps. Thanks; Nice little reminder Phantom Quote Link to post
markha 99
Hi Phantom, Thanks for the point Im glad it has refreshed you and reminded you of all those great days you may have had in the mountains, and perhaps the crap weather you often get in the hills too! Yes, the 5 pebbles in the pocket is a good way of counting off every 100m leg, there are great little plastic counters made by SILVA, that glue to your compass, just click it once for every 100m, job done. Cheers for now Mark Quote Link to post
davyt63 1,845
hi marka before i had a range finder,i use to measure one fair stride,it was 0.900mm and then just do the math.the longest i paced out a shot was 72,which was 64.8 yds regards davy Quote Link to post
cameroncharles 2
i've tried various methods but found that exactly 12 relaxed paces equals 10 yds,40yds are then 48 paces. I've measured this and am within 1 pace for accuracy as long as you remember to keep the paces the same. Quote Link to post
