baldockbanks courser 598
went to my first lurcher show (try not to go to many )of the year mainlie to buy a few nets. i decided to take my two young bitches to get them out the kennels for day. every one who was running it was helpful and nice people. put them in the racing for a bit of exercise. when it starts theres about 20 muscle bond fat whippet grey hound and bed x whippete making more noise than youv ever herd as a big white sheet is being pulled along the ground as a lure. my two stood watching in silence showing no intrest at all. having run hares and rabbits with enthusiasum but never having seen a race i was not too supprised when neither showed any intrest in a white bed sheet and didnt put any effort into chasing it. one wouldnt even run. i can see in years to come most lurchers not being fit for there purpose. the only thing these animals would acheive is to put every animal with in a mile to ground with there wining as other dogs ran the game! long live the hard working lurcher ! ! lofti 579
ive always wonderd why they dont use a lure that resembles a rabitt or a hare, even a brown rag as a lure would give alot more dogs a chance of a run . Quote Link to post

Wild_and_Irish 11
I was going to do it for the craic at a show close to me but was worried something like this would happen, my dog won't chase ANYTHING that isn't game anymore/ Quote Link to post

I've nothing against Lurchers having a run behind a lure for a laugh, in fact I walk my dogs to the local Whippet track, 3 mile, give them a run or two, then walk back, it's a bit different to normal excersize. I'ts the people who are breeding "Lurchers" 15/16th or even more, Greyhound blood and take the racing so seriously. As you say, why not just get a Whippet or Greyhound and do it properly; under rules and out of traps ? Cheers. Quote Link to post
wuyang 513
I paid a visit to the whippet racing the other weekend at Maltby Rotherham.. i really enjoyed it. End of the day a lurcher will chase a ball etc so what does it really matter what the lure looks like..its just a bit of fun, although to some a passion. Quote Link to post

Wuyang; off topic, but your avatar made me smile. I remember when I was in South East Asia, the record I saw for most on a motor bike was 2 adults, three toddlers, a baby, a basket of washing and a dog in the basket !!!!! All on a Honda step thru' !!!! Cheers. Quote Link to post
