Just bought a 1 year old patterdale terrier and it doesn't like going anywhere near the entry holes of fox earths. Had terriers before but they were top workers when i bought them so i havent got a clue how to get it working any tips?

give it time get it chasing first as much bush work as possible. are you working a pack or on its own

are you sure its never been tried sounds a bit suss if dont like going near the holes prob knows whats waiting for it mate atb biza

Does sound a bit strange, maybe its been entered too early and had a hiding! I would keep it away from earths until winter, its still too young anyway. Get out with some digging lads next season and let it have a rag at the end of a dig once the fox has been dispatched.

my two experienced workers got nicked 2 months ago but i got a 8 month 2nd cross bull grey i need to get going and it'll be handy if it turns out into a good bushing terrier but i'm really more interested in working terriers below ground

I've been told it works and yes the earth is empty but my old terriers still got stuck in checking out the pipes for ages.

sounds like your old terriers were shit then !!! don't write the young dog of, just because he wont go to ground in an empty earth! plenty of time!!

Many good terriers will not look twice at an earth unless it is occupied.Personaly I would be very dissapointed if my terriers did anything else.I would personaly say that a dog "getting stuck in" to empty earths or pipes is pretty much false marking. Just my opinion and it's each to his own I know but to my mind showing no intrest in empty earths is more of a possitive than a negitive.Above all though mate remember that he is still very young to be working to ground so take your time with him.

As above mate you dont want your digging dogs marking rabbits so again this is a good thing

none of my terriers will drop into an unoccupied earth. give it time. let it enjoy the summer doing a bit of bushing by winter time he will b the [bANNED TEXT] age. atb.
