Gun / ammo car storage ?

Recommended Posts

Hi all :)

Can anybody tell me how the law stands in the UK for gun and ammo storage while in a car.

What i need to clarify is : Can i take my shotgun or rifle and ammo to work with me locked away in the boot so i can go straight to my permission after i finish work.

At the moment i'm doing a 60 mile round trip to work and back and it would be a lot easier if i could go shooting straight from my place of work once i have finished my shift ,

John

PS : all staff vehicles are parked in a multi storey private car park .

Security on the move

The basic rule is again to take every reasonable precaution. If you are going to travel a lot with your gun, then lockable storage in the car is a good idea.

You shouldn't leave a complete gun unattended in a car. If you have to leave it in a car, either remove the bolt or fore-end and take it with you, so the gun cannot be fired. Always keep it hidden if you can. It's a good idea always to keep the gun in its slip as well.

If you have a car alarm, make sure it's on, and obviously lock the car! Generally though, it's best to avoid leaving a gun in the car, and take it with you instead.

You should only have a gun with you in the car if you are going shooting, have just bought it or are taking it to be repaired. You can't just keep a gun in a car for no reason, and go to the supermarket! There must be a sensible reason for having the gun in the car.

Gun security is important, and the consequences of getting it wrong can go a lot further than simply losing your gun certificate. So spend the time and the money to get it right!

I use a Firearm Security Cable which is fastened to the floorpan of my car, and then passed through the rear of the bolt housing and is padlocked. I do this if i have to leave my vehicle with the rifle in it before, during or after stalking.

Your problem is not having your rifle secured, which is relativly easy, but the bolt, ammunition and knives that you will be carrying too. You cannot leave them in your car while you are at work, because the law deems your car as a public place if a knife is in there, and you need a good reason to be carrying it! The reason, "because i am going stalking later" may not be good enough.

I think this is one of those situations that people find themselves in, and take their rifles and equipment and risk the wrath of the police. There ought to be provision in law for stalkers to take their equipment with them, and common sense should prevail, but the only safe option would be to seek proper legal counsels advice.

It is no good relying upon advice from the local police, I think advice from BASC or legal counsel would be the only safe way to proceed. BASC will also stand up for the advice they give, in court if necessary.
