I'll admit to only having a passing interest in this story, so I don't know all the in's and out's. Due to the volcanic ash death cloud, praise be upon him, airlines are being told they must reimburse certain costs that their passengers have incurred due to their flights being canceled. One such cost is accommodation, possibly others but I don't know about that. Now I happen to think this is completely unreasonable. Granted, I'm in the comfortable position of being at home, so I can say that. I am sure someone stranded in airport hell would disagree, and as an experienced member of that club I can empathise. As far as I understand bus and ferry companies need only refund ticket price in the face of cancellations, then that's their job done. I think the airlines are being treated unfairly, the 'planes, I'm reasonably sure, are serviceable and working as they should, but, they can't fly due to the mega angry ash death cloud from across the seas, praise be upon him. Surely that's a safety issue due to an act of God. It is not the airline cheaping out on their mechanics and the wing falling off on the taxi ramp. I reckon they should refund ticket prices, and leave it at that. I don't see why they need reimburse these other costs when other companies in the business of moving people about play by a different set of rules. It's only a bus with wings after all.

What say ye?

I don't think they should have to.

On the news I saw a woman in tears while sat in a four star hotel being put up until she could get home. Stupid cow, there's thousands of young lads in the armed forces stuck away from home dodging bullets day in day out, being put up in a hotel and having your meals paid for is f**k all in the scheme of things.. People have gone soft..

My daughter was due to fly to london at 7am up untill 11pm the night before all was fine them she got a email saying the flight was cancelled and she had to book a train . I think they should have to recompensate passengers and give them a good will payment

I understand your daughters position. I was caught in CDG in Paris just after New Years one time.

But, why should airlines refund any more than the cost of the ticket? I don't think bus/train/ferry companies have to.
