Guest jt750
lurcher puppies grow 2 different ways ...they look fat and chunky one day then lean and skinny the next day to the point you feel embarrassed to take them out ...don't worry a dog won't starve itself nevermind a puppy Quote Link to post
Wild_and_Irish 11
if you really need to put on weight feed in a wee bit of beef fat, butcher should give you it free, but as has been said get it on some raw meat anyway, and their weight really does go up and down like nothing right Quote Link to post
mike1458 14
Pasta is also a good thing I find with my pup to help him put weight on. To keep the weight on the best thing to use in lamb breast. Cheap enough to buy from the butchers mate. ATB Mike Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
Ditch the tinned and dry food: give the pup some REAL MEAT. If its only 3 months old get you to the butcher or supermarket and buy some beef mince, NOT the low fat variety, just the cheapest. Get some chicken wings, some breast of lamb and watch the little pup tuck in. You could of course also read up on BARF: do a search on here or Google it. Believe me your attitude to commercial dog food will never be the same again! By the way: tinned dog food is about % water, and Beta dog food is mostly cereals, not exactly what a growing pup needs. Don't worry, most people believed that buying dog food was the right thing to do at one time or another: but once you've fed your dog as nature intended ON MEAT and BONES I'd be astounded if you ever want to feed it any other way ever again. 2 Quote Link to post
Daveo 61
Iv put somw pictures up of my pup (Wheaton cross)bit older than yours, he has been on flesh and whole rabbits etc from 6 wks and he is doing spot on. I found a poultry wholsaler who sell minced chicken for 45p for a 3lb bag, Quote Link to post
sandymere 8,263
Pups tend to go through stages with growth spurts and filling out, it may be yours is just going through a stage and will fill out shortly. I don't feed tinned , I prefere dried comletes as a basis, but know that millions of puppies have been reared successfully on it so if it's what you want to use don't let the evangelical attitude of the raw brigade bully you into believing there diet will be better than yours. A picture of the pup would allow informed advice as to its real condition, many people worry that their pups are not right but it usually turns out to be nothing in the longer term. How many feeds a day are you giving, a few smaller rather than one or two bigger may encourage but in truth you don’t want a fat bloated pup but a slimmer energetic one is the ideal. If you are really worried I take it to your vet who will be able to access from hands on perspective which will always be better than a computer one. If it loses energy, starts having problems such as diarrhoea etc then straight to the vet. If you are planning on working the dog in the future then the diet may need tayloring a little later and make sure there are somthing to chew for teeth cleaning otherwise the soft tinned diet will lead to dental problems later. Regards Sandymere. Quote Link to post
