i must be mad going ferreting now

Recommended Posts

well i've been ferreting 4 days in the last week  hedges have been slashed ditches cleaned out, the warrens blocked and I've been back and done the warrens that have been reopened,I did actually bolt some kitts yesterday and they were despatched no sentiment in pest control.I used stop nets through the hedges no purse nets,2 jills and a dog the nettles did sting but not one dig in 4 days  enough faith in the ferrets to know they'll kill and move on.This is a new farm bought by the estate and the numbers need reducing drastically before the cover is up.One of the boundaries is horrendous and I'll have to approach the adjoining landowner tomorrow to access his side of the hedge

Well, I have a lovely brace of nice, quick moving, yearling hobs. They are bred from my best friends hob and a good working jill that he bought - and they are fantastic just like their parents.

No plodding about like some sluggish hobs you see, these are faster than racing snakes!

When I'm out working them, using my home made purse nets and my quick-set long-net, or just bolting to the shot gun, these ferrets (like their father and uncle) are like hounds on a fox. I very rarely need to dig if they make a kill as they wont lie with a dead-un, they'll often bring them out. They are great at catching rabbits and will often catch them just as the rabbits are leaving their holes, or in thick undergrowth, and then bring them out into the open for me to pick up.

Sometimes I take them out without any nets or guns and just hunt them like hounds! Admittedly you don't get the numbers - but its such great fun. Last week I did a small hedge, about 80 yards, and just let them do their stuff. They killed 2 and brought them both out to the mouths of the holes for me to pick up, and these 2 rabbits kept them fed for a week. Great exercise for the ferrets and a different element to the sport.

Best day this season was 41 rabbits on a 200 yard hedge using 4 ferrets in rotation (max 2 at a time), purse nets and long nets.
