The blacks are just melanistic greys.

They are just a black (melanistic) colour variety of the grey . The variation seems commoner in Eastern England for some reason . My part of Sussex throws up more white squirrels than anywhere else apparently .In fact the emblem of my local golf course is a white squirrel. I suppose for obvious reasons they tend to not get so much chance to pass their genes on so don't form the large local populations that the black does.

The black variety is claimed to be more aggressive but there is no obvious reason why it should be unless some disadvantage of being black has led to an inbred survival of the fitest mentality or if their coluring gives them an advantage in urban situations where they are said to be commonest .It would be interesting to see if any scientific study has been done along these lines .
