splitting ferrets up

Recommended Posts

i have got 2 jills they are mother and daughter they have allways been in the same cage with each other would i have to split them up when they have there kits.

I would split them, they will rear together, but you often get problems with one jill dragging the other about, treating it as if it's a kit. Also if they both have big litters in the same nest, the smaller ones sink to the bottom and don't do well , often dying. Unfortunately these small ones are usually the jills. So unless you want a high percentage of hobs, split them.

Id leave them together as they have always been together it might stress them parting them and a young jill might need a hand rearing her kitts

And that advice is based on what! Anthropomorphism ? :wallbash: At least mine was based on 50 years of experience.

I would also split them up ... i think they need there own space when there rearing young & dont be tempted to peep at them the second there born ...

Totally aree with Romany about the jills mothering each other

purely a personsonal choice of mine

And you think my advice is based on a week of keeping ferrets :censored:

Depends on how big the cage/hutch is to be honest my mates ferrets are in like a wendy house with 2 or 3 nest boxes. he has 2 sisters rear the kits togeather and all came out fine. Just up to people if they are in enough space then whay not?

Split my jills while they have kits, I've had jills without kits fighting with jills with kits, also had jills take kits from other jills because they had none of their own, but were unable to feed them because they had no milk, so they perished. So my choice is to seperate them, just makes life easier if you have a problem, thats the good thing about having a spare cage
