My garden will be super-dee-duper this year, so all you allotmenteers- get your fingers out! Ive just planted some rhubarb and getting ready for some other stuff to go in soon. Guest bullterrier Posted March 3, 2010 Report Share Posted March 3, 2010 asparagus is a long term investment to your allotment mate firstly find a spot on your plot were you don't get any flooding dig a good trench out and put some old bricks rocks at the bottom for drainage and when some well rotten horse shit sieve the soil over a wheelbarrow before putting it back into the tench making sure you remove all weed because you want to give your young plants the best possible start because they will be there for up to 20 years and keep on top of the weed just pinch them out and you;ll be wait up to 2to3 year for your first crop depending which variety you decide on the purple ones getting popular now why not try a few variety's do a search that way you will extend your season good luck .. ..john Quote Link to post Share on other sites

North Country Boy 0 Posted March 8, 2010 Report Share Posted March 8, 2010 ive just finished digging over my 2nd raised bed that i built in my garden last year, in the 1st one i grew starwberrys parsnips sprouts and leeks, planted 6 asparagus plants in it too so looking forward to harvesting it in years to come, last year i also grew potatoes in bags but neglected to water them as often as i should have and ballsed it up. Have also got several fruit trees and bushes planted all over my garden including rhubarb, gooseberry, redcurrant, blackcurrent, crab apple, sloe, pear, apple and plum. Having a go at alsorts this year now i have 2 beds to tackle, i was a great feeling being able to harvest all my veg for xmas dinner and now im hooked i'll be doing the same this year too. Do you have a big garden? It sounds like a real attraction for birds, (but maybe that's not a good thing where fruit is concerned) I do love to see birds in the garden though. I grow my spuds in bags, they seem to do well but do need watered every day, sometimes more than once. I have a pond in my garden, so it's bucket loads of matured water over them every day. I am going to have another go at gardens peas this year, i think i sowed them too late last year and they did not really thrive and then they got eat by snails Go for it!
