i have a 1st cross deerhound and just started him around 7 months old only a couple of runs over 2 weeks 7 in all 4 rabbits easy ones to but the shit wont bring them back takes an age any tips to stop him doing this. he comes straight back when walking and so on

get a rabbit skin and put it round a pop bottle and tie it on and chuck it in a field and let the dog off and try to get him to retrive lyk that but sometimes it works somtimes it doesent atb Top Lamper

At 7 months a great big dog like that is way too young to be lamping. Deerhounds can take an age to train, but once you have the basics in there they never forget. They are very slow to mature both physically and mentally, and if you don't damage the dog physically by running it this young, you certainly won't get the best out of the dog mentally as it will be doing things for itself rather than for you.

 

Spend the spring and summer concentrating on basic mooching round fields: get the recall up to scratch, without anything in its mouth, then get a rabbit skin dummy and drag it around on a length of string to get the dog to pick it up: I've found you really need to teach these sort of dogs what to do: you can't just go out in the field and expect them to know what you want of them. You can then reel the dog in whilst its holding the dummy, praising it all the time even if you have to drag it towards you.

 

If the dog lets go of the dummy try it the other way round, with the dog on a long length of string while you throw the dummy a short distance away, then let the dog go to pick it up, following behind if need be, and reel the dog in holding the dummy: steadily and gently and praising like mad when dog gets to you.

 

Its' about time someone made a really good DVD of how to train reluctant retrievers as with lurchers different types have different problems learning what we want of them.

it iva will or it wont lurchers anit bred to retrive. i have 2 lurchers a deerxgrey x beddy wippit grey she wont retrieve . she did once but not now done quite abit of retreiveing with her as a pup /iv got a 3/4grey/1/4 collie hes nerly 9month old and he retreives live to hand but never don any retreiven before with him /so what i do is when they have court a rabbit turn the lamp off and start lamping again in the opsit direction and whistal him and if he comes prase him to feck /and some dont if theres a nother dog there .atb
