wondering if anyone has made a homemade ghillie suit and how effective was it and what materails did you use and what steps did you take to make it thank for your time

I made several Ghillie suits a few years ago, and I think the home made ones are better.

To Start you need an olive green boiler suit, then pop down to a local army surplus store (If you have one near you) and ask them about all there old combat jackets and trousers etc.

They will normally have a fair bit of grade 3-4 unusable kit that they may sell cheap. Also any charity shops with old clothes green, brown, black etc.

Then get handy with a stanley knife. You want to cut strips about an inch long by varying lenghts, from say 6 inches up to 12 inches.

Then start making slits in the boiler suit and thread the strips of material through and either tie a knot to hold the strip in place or even better sew the strips in place (This saves you having to slit the boiler suit)You then start building up the layers with all different lengths until you have the desired effect you are after.

The same applies to a boony hat, you can sew the fabric on to the hat building up the layers. I then tie a bit of rope to the suit and tie it onto a push bike and go for a ride for 5 min, this ensures it gets a bit shitty and doesnt look brand new.

I know you can buy the suits for around £150 off fleabay, but the way I have described it cost around £20-£30 and a bit of time.

Hope this is of some help to you

any netting you can get hold of, pop it over your head to find where you want the head hole, then trim it to the shape you want.

(or sew the net to a coat/trousers/boiler suit whatever.....)

get somw jute string (cheaper the better lol) cut it into 14-20 inch strips, dunt matter that much, somw dylon dyes or who evers dyes and colour them, then tie the buggers on the netting till cows come home.(clumps of fours or more.)

its worth looking at you tube, theres one with a few parts but it pritty much covers everything.

Cut up old sacking into 10 inch strps about 3 inches wide and then rough up the edges with a wire brush and sew that in too - it is great for breaking up edges of shape and blending in

I have my old suit I made years ago somewhere - I will see if I can find it and get some pics

heres part 1... follows on the side menu part 2 etc.

end of the day any old crap can strung together, its just a matter of how long before you have make another, so better materials meens years, but grass dreid out, rags....bags.. string.. wool what ever, raggy'er the better..............dont forget to make a gun cover to match when you do it, matching colour shades its a bit like the lottery lol.(thats if it matters...ifthe gun cover blends in the same area your suit does then it'll work).

edit..............if it costs more than a ready made for materials then hey ho...buy it, unless you want to make your own specificaly, it'll get ripped sooner or later, or snagged, dirty, wet etc etc, end of the day its a bitta mucky rag that goes over you, you have to wear/smell/put up with it............
