cassshantia 16
hi to all the saluki men out there just a quick question for you in a minute ------ ive had lurchers for over 15 yrs and been of mixed variety but all have the same coursing techniques ie run down beam or straight to rab or hare pre ban of course)and try to catch it as quick as poss so you get a good long /short hard working dog snapping at their heels which the thrill for me is far greater than a dog which runs its quarry till its on it last legs like the saluki , yes they have great stamina but in my eyes it gets me why peope enjoy the running of these dogs as they hardly ever snap and take their quarry in full flight on the dvd s or vids you see the hares is about fucxxx i know a long course is good to see but when its working it like a shepherd dog ,rounding it up between hedges etc till it drops is not for me put a light on this job please or your preferences to any of you out there with longdogs / lurchers not for an arguement please cheers gibbo Quote Link to post

cassshantia 16
found it , i know its coursing but you have to enjoy it surely also im not on about flying up and tare arsing about i just think putting its quarry under pressure to make a mistake then striking it is far more a test for quarry than running it to its last breathe Quote Link to post

boyo 1,398
i think a lot of it is horses for courses some of the fen stickers ive seen would struggle on the smaller feilds to stay with the hare but tbh come in to their own on the big fen i suppose that the ideal is a fast good mouth dog that can stay on a sticker the ideal dog i suppose but theres not that many about that have got it all. stroller 341
we have a big saluki dog and absolute character and beautiful to look at but i dont rate him YET!! he may change over the next year or so (Coming up to 3). he would be ideal as a fen dog but he never seems to try consistently he wont hunt up he wont retrieve he wont mark sets he is a tail biter if his quarry has teeth he isnt easy to kennel up with other dogs he can run all day but my gundogs do that his recall is ok and general obedience is fine we keep him because he is ok at the job and on a good day he is a pleasure to watch. But above all the family put up with his odd ways because he is such a loving dog he jut loves to be by your side we couldnt part with him (But he is the last one we will ever have) Quote Link to post
