Dependent on strain, some beddy crosses are prone to poor coats, they look good till a closer inspection shows not much cover. I have one that has been held up as the"right sort" for ferreting by a bystander at a local show but in truth the rough coat is pretty thin and would not be the best for waiting a lay up on a frosty morning. Her kennel mate is smooth coated and at first glance less well covered has a much thicher jacket, it's a job to find any skin when you part it. Both have the same diet, kennel and work so likely the genetics rather than conditions. I'd avoid massaging as I've found this can lead to coat loss and a good balenced diet.

My old bitch's jacket used to go thin and fall out if I fed her on feed over 20% protein, I kept protein low and added vitamins, helped cure it in my case.
