Sky Rat bashing

Recommended Posts

Went out again today as Father in Law was beginning to throw a paddy over pigeons feeding on the rape.

He was mildly sceptical about the amount of pigeons an airgun could pot in 3 hours.

Took the S410 TDR and HW77 and headed for a spinny and popular pigeon hang out in the middle of a 70 acre rape field. Set out shell decoys in a standard, wind facing U, 20 meters from my chosen hide and following advise in Pete Wadeson's book, popped a couple in the trees above.

Waited for about 30 mins, without so much as sparrow to be seen, then our favorite, feathered, car paint spoilers descended.

The first three landed in the tree's above at about 30 degrees 20 meters to my left. I moved gently but quickly to pop No. 2 in the cross hairs, a gentle squeeze on the trigger and puff, the pathetic rapport of the S410 spat a .22 accupel skywards and straight in to said sky rats neck. It fell straight in to the extensive covering of brambles in the middle of the spinny, clearly passed on. No 1 pigeon had taken a polite leave but No 3 was still there. Gently recocking, the S410 burped again and sent No 3 to join No 2 in the brambles. Irretrievable and dead.

Three or four misses in a row followed as pigeons landed in my decoy pattern then realised it was a duff call and fled.

Following another 20 mins of pigeon clear skies, a flock (about 20ish) dropped almost in unison on to the pattern and trees. Ping, re cock, Ping, and another two in the trees sent on their way with shots landing in their necks from beneath. The rest decided to vanish. I used these two to further bolster my ground pattern and popped two more shell decoys in to the trees.

Another spell of occasional flutters, ricochets off twigs and near ground landings followed and soon pigeon bed time was on me!

In a large wave, about 40 + pigeons descended on all sides of the spinny I managed to despatch three of them, before the rest had time to check the B+B guide for safer accommodation. One, a very lucky 35+ meters through twigs on the opposite side. I just guest at .22 hold over of around about 3/4 inch and sent the lead off. The pigeon dropped on to the rough ground below. Real fluke!

The final one I managed to get when he popped in for a pre bed time snack finally getting a pigeon on the floor, I think he had something more digestible than a head full of accupell.

Decided to call it a day at 8, called the In Laws to offer a couple to (read brag!). Going back tomorrow for a retry in a different corner after listening to Boss in Law's generous congratulations!
