max abell 196
We are lucky in the sense we can drive round all our permissions in the 4x4 but when the ground is waterlogged we carry what think we will need there is normally about 4 of us so its spreads the load thankfully Quote Link to post
comanche 3,264
When the ground is too muddy for my prize Sri Lankan elephant to venture forth I used to forego ferreting until a few frosts had hardened things up enough to get the Seppala -strain sled dogs out. They were the days . Team after team of grinning juks straining in the traces ,hauling load after load of purse-nets and reels of long-netting right up to the best ferreting ground .Weeks later the same teams would carry ton upon ton of rabbit carcases from the tundra of the Sussex Downs to the sheltered Ouse and Cuckmere river valleys where traders would dicker over the price before loading them into huge container ships . Nowadays of course I just get the barrow out and bivvi -up next to the burrows like bleedin crap fisherman . Got bite alarms on the ferrets so I know when they make a kill and when nothing is bolting I kick back on me bed-chair,read dirty magazines or doze off with a fag smelling of burning holly in me hand . Yeh I use a barrow all the time . In the garden . Quote Link to post
festa 206
does anyone use a trolley or wheeelbarrow of some description to lug all of their gear about whilst ferreting? we have been finding lugging the catch as well as the gear which includes slasher and sickle becasue of the thick hedges we work a bit of a job. when i first went ferreting a few year back with some old boy who had an old wooden barrow that seemed to work well. if you do or can think of any suggestions to the design, as my first prototype is being tesed on saturday. its a butchered fishing trolley which is now more of a barrow and all collapses down into to boot of asmall car. any suggestions like how to attach spades and slashers etc would be great and most space efficent way of carryiing the rabbits thanks rob ive got the best thing ..he's called wor kid aka marksman lol atb gary Quote Link to post
MR TEA POT 1,287
I would go round the buries a few days before ferreting to cut all the undergrowth back.So you will have no need to carry a slasher or sickle on the day of ferreting. Then all you will have is your net bag, ferret box and spade. Before i got a 4x4 i had to carry all my gear,i used to have a 65litre rucksack,i would put all ther purse nets in at the bottom, then food and flask on top,got a bungee rope and tied the spade to the side with that. Then just sling it on your back, adjust the straps and you can carry it all day long with no problems. You then have your hands free to carry any rabbits that will not fit in the rucksack. Then just chuck your ferret box over your shoulder. Quote Link to post
