SEAN3513 7
i never use filters over 50yds, as you say the light is reduced greatly. i know some lads that don't use them at all. personal choice i guess. atb sean Quote Link to post
camokid 125
there good but if your shooting rabbits past 100 yards all i tend to see is glowing eyes and a rough body shape. take the red of and you can see a million times better the lamp i use is a 170 gun mounted striker its nice but am planning to get a 223 next month and i will be shooting a longer distance and think i will struggle a bit?? The one 8,600
I use clubmans with the four coloured filters just for rabbits never had a problem with using air rifles or the rimmy Quote Link to post
JohnGalway 1,043
I don't rate red filters, they take away too much light and you're still using juice (carry my battery in a backpack so this is important to me). Amber filter is good for fox, but I wouldn't shoot a fox much past 150 with it, and even then I'd want to be absolute cast iron sure of my backstop as in it'd have to be right there behind him, and not a little in the distance. Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Agreed mate .Have you tried the green or blue filters .Had very good results from both with foxes used to the white light . Quote Link to post
FOXHUNTER 5,022
Amber filter is much better than red as there is more light transmission .. Quote Link to post
weejohn 3
I use the amber filter on the 170 and is good for 200+ yds and thats with it fitted with a 50w bulb. I also use the red but only if there is a lamp shy fox going about. how good are the green or blue? Quote Link to post
Deker 3,491
I have mentioned this on a number of occasions when people talk about lamp power, if you intend to use a red filter you need a lamp with clout, think Deben Max UPWARDS, or you will have a job seeing past the end of the barrel!!!! I seldom use a filter at all these days, BUT ALWAYS use the DIMMER switch. All situations and circumstances are different, by all means play with filters to see what variables occur, what works for me/you may not work for someone else!! Quote Link to post

A Striker 170 will be fine for a .223, no question about that unless you are going to be shooting over 300 yards more often than not. I have a red filter and also an amber filter. The amber filter is great for those Foxes that don't bolt straight away, but are suspicious of you, gives you a chance. The red one i only tend to use if there are lampshy foxes about. Other than those two situations, I prefer to use the normal light. The glass on your rifle will also make a huge difference to light transmission Quote Link to post
