hi big bull

for my first shotgun i got a baikal o/u 12 it was cheap (only £100 s/h from a shop). it shoots very well and has a nice moose/elk? and hare engraving. despite rough treatment and rain it is still like new. i love this gun but some people look down at them because of their cheapness and/or sturdy appearence but i think their great!, i will upgrade when funds allow but for now im happy with it and would recomend one to anyone on a budget or a first gun.

my first was a beretta al 391 12g extrema, its a belter, semi auto, so not to everyones taste, second is beretta silver pigeon, love it too, use both of them often, o/u for clays, extrema for game,

then i got head staggers and bought a beretta 20g al391 semi aswell, i love it more than either 12g, weighs just 2.4kg, it kills anything i hit with it, very similiar range in real terms to a 12g,

only prob with them is they are expensive.

hope you get the best you can, atb nut

i get my shot gun liecence after xmas and i am wondering what will be the best shotgun for a first timer in owning one i like the over and under ones so i hope some one can help

This is difficult as you do not say your primary use or mention money.

The way I started with shotguns was with my Dad, had no money and ended up buying several Spanish guns in the early days. There seemed to be more of them about years ago than today. Anyway, they were cheap, reliable and taught me a lot!

As time went by I ended up with a Beretta 303 in around 1990. It was like a breath of fresh air. It just felt so good, smooth, precise and a feeling of confidence, to be fair I don't think my shooting improved at all. Went on to get a 686 Sporting Special with 28inch, Silver Pigeon III, with 30inch barrels and a 391 Game with 28inch. By this time my lad had taken a very keen interest in the 303 and loved it.

I sold the 303 some years back as PX for one of my rifles, a big mistake. A couple of years later my lad got his FAC/SGC and I bought him a Hatsan Escort Magnum. Biggest heap of Dogs doings going!

So, inexpensive O/U are to be found and can/will teach you a lot, not necessarily a bad route. If you have a bit more to spend think about something like a Beretta, even a used one is not cheap, but possibly a better LONG term bet than a cheap gun! But don't necessarily expect your shooting to improve with an expensive gun!

If you can, think carefully about some instruction asap. Lessons are not cheap but help to stop you getting into bad habits!
