andyf 144
Hello chaps! I've used most of the mentioned brands over the last 40 years, also i've had 15 or so different rifles so my opinion is probably 'clouded' by time and rifle choice? Today by choice I use only Winchester Subsonics, Eley and RWS are also in there now and again due to supply issues. To be honest I have not found a truely 'dreadful' make. Most .22 ammo is 'OK', Magtech (Brazil) was a bit of of a wild card though, cheap as chips and quite good, but later batches and any i've tried since 2001 have been 'Crap' to say the least? The 'old' RWS had nickel plated cases, and at that time I was using a Anschutz 525 semi-auto, and I thought that the silver cases were slicker than the plain brass, also I thought they were the BMW (German) of .22, but they caved in to cheapness and reverted to brass, and now they are at best average! As an aside, I think that HV .22 ammo is generally better than sub-sonic in terms of consistancy, the Velocitor brand is just the best I have tried (i.e. In a decent rifle, SAKO Finnfire Varmint). Maybe subsonic is venturing below the optimum for the cartridge? therefore testing the manufacturing beyond it's realistic datum? Anyhow Olin Industries in Australia (Winchester) get my vote, I can get a 0.75" group of 5 shots from 55 yards off a bipod and a round bale with no wind, SAKO Finnfire Varmint 17" barrel + Leupold VX3 2,5>14x50 LRT + SAK moderator, that's plenty good enough for Devon & Cornwall rabbits.
