Ferrets and kitten.

Recommended Posts

Who said anyting about it being a pet cat? Its a horrible feral fecker in the middle of a shoot and they get killed regularly the same as any other vermin that its legal to control. They breed like rats and kill indiscriminately and are only out there doing this damage due to pet owners who don't bother to get them neutered (you know they type, dead against killing things but don't mind their cats killing hundreds of native creatures) and end up dumping the kittens and mother because they can't be arsed with them. Then we end up with colonies of the horrible sods which in a rural environment do a lot more damage than foxes. Round factories etc then yes they can keep the mice and rats down but even then they get out of control without a neutering programme.

I would never kill someones pet cat, I had one myself for ten years and it really upset me getting her put down due to cancer but these are different. My mate is probably smiling because he couldn't believe his hob had killed it, neither could I and its the last thing we were expecting at the end of a 3ft dig.

in all fairness to the guy people cant get pissy just because its a kitten as the ferret did what its supposed to do at the end of the day. and as for introducing the ferrets to a kitten i wouldnt i had a monster hob before and the neighbours cat was about having a peek while the hob was out exercising next thing i know ferrets doing his best to dispatch it.

You must excuse me gnipper - our pet cat has been missing for a fortnight now & he's not in the habit of going out for more than a few hours at a time so we are thinking the worst... I agree that feral cats should be controlled & neutered, but please make sure the cats are truly feral before you kill them...

A word of warning about cats and ferrets though - many years ago a friend of my Dad's kept ferrets and when an old lady neighbour had a big old tom cat which was run over she asked him to bury it... Not one to let a bit of ferret food go to waste he slung the supposedly dead cat in the ferrets locker. An hour or so later his young daughter wanted to know why there was a cat trying to get out of the locker and why the two ferrets were dead. He did actually return the cat to its owner, but he said it came to before he had a chance to bury it, he never admitted he was feeding it to the ferrets!

Don't worry these are truly feral, I have a couple of places where there is quite a few of them.

As for feeding them to ferrets I wouldn't risk it with ferrets being so susceptable to cat flu and with these cats not being innoculated its likely they could be carrying it. I wouldn't intentionally put a ferret to ground on one either although I think old Stumpy would love another tangle with one

This one decided not to bolt so my mates three legged hob despatched it :o

:( A working ferret will kill a kitten with ease and one of my partners old hob had a good go with the neighbours adult tom cat when he escaped a few years ago! I wouldn't introduce them at all, in fact i think i would try my best to keep them away from each other! They won't be working together so theres no need imo. ATB :victory:

Yip, well said, they're not going to work together so why risk it!

and how did it die.? you let a ferret kill it, and i know that ferrets dont kill quick. plus it was a kitten, had no chance to get away. plus your mate was holding it like a trophy. it mite have been feral but it is still an animal that has the right to die as humanely as possible. you could have despatched it in a quicker way and not stood there smiling for a photo like an idiot who was clearly pleased to have killed it.

It was down a rabbit hole, those of us who actually hunt allow their ferrets to enter holes and do what comes naturally to them. As I said I wouldn't knowingly enter a ferret to a cat, sometimes in the countryside ferrets come up against various critters which reside in rabbit holes, i've dug to hedgehogs before and bolted stoats, rats, shellducks and mice never bolted a fox but plenty of people have along with feral cats too. My mate was pleased to have killed it, he helps out with the keepering on the shoot and its one less predator on the ground. You say that ferrets kill slowly (is this from personal experience???) but don't aren't specific about what prey, does this mean that your against the killing of rabbits by ferrets too which is what I would hope 100% of the people reading and posting on these boards that own ferrets get out and do?

In my opinion I would say that your on completely the wrong forum for you if thats the case.
