ellir0305 9
i have spent the last few evenings making up a wooden larsen which is going great and just needs meshing once the wood treatment is dry. i will put some pictures up once i get the chance. anyway my question is what is the best way to get my call bird, i have readabout the fake nest but being as its not really egg laying season i thought that maggies might show some kind of seasonal preferance and avoid the eggs as suspicious. but the maggies are causing a nuisance and would be better off removed asap (according to the landowner) what would you more experienced guys do in this situation? thanks atb rob Quote Link to post

ellir0305 9
Ive been bringing them down with a dead woodie, one cheeky bugger even flew into the shed after a dead woodie on the worktop bugger, looks like i will have to go shoot a woody first (which is annoying because i normally eat them) i will see what i can do i will set it out tomorrow, with some bread and egg shells if i have no luck getting a woody. any other bait suggestions i am very open minded at this point edited to say: which compartment should i put the bait in? dogs-n-natives 1,182
edited to say: which compartment should i put the bait in? ... not the decoy compartment any game like pheasant, partridge, rabbit hare whatever, will work, but I find easier results if the trap is up against a wall or fence, have a small bit of bait outside the trap, and the rest in the two catching compartments... il often use a roadkill to good effect. Iv never used bread, but i can say that a fake nest with eggs is a cracker early spring, they may fall for it at this time of year... good luck Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
I also think it depends whether the magpies are urban or country birds...... Maybe Quote Link to post
East coast 2
I used to put eggs in the catching compartment during march april time. Worked for me. On baiting larsen traps I was told that ages ago that meat could not be put in the caching compartment as this would target the wrong species. Anyone else heard this our was the guy talking Quote Link to post
