Squirrel_Basher 17,103
Tuesday evening saw me finish work earlier than usual to get down to Martins in daylight for an evenings stalk.Martin decided on a plce that ive been before ,several times ,and where he shot the strange malform earlier in the season .The ground lends itself to stalking perfectly as the hedges are hazel which overhangs the fields nicely to walk beneath without creating a silouette .There is a natural bowl here that the deer love on warm evenings but to night they were out in the pasture,4 all told ,a young yeld doe ,a doe and twins and a buck that was annoyed by the twins attention it seemed as he shook his head at them whenever they came near .As we crept into position ,we saw a fox in front of them but not just any old charlie mind as he had a very impressive white tip to the tail ,almost a third the length of its tail ,very prominent .I decided i would settle for him as ive shot my quota of bucks for this season and then some.He was at about 120 yds and i should of taken him there but i squeaked to get his attention but he came hurtling in .There was a dip between us that he disapeared in but instead of him coming out our side ,a poor looking doe with obvious bad scouring appeared and no fox?We watched this specimen and Martin pondered whether it was the doe with the bad leg hed seen before .Her coat was mattwed and she had the sunken sides of a beast not well .She grazed into the brambles and out of sight so we moved on a bit to study the other deer . The buck looked to be well mature ,between mature and old age ,having partly shed his summer coat too .I stooped up the hedge aware that a doe was watching me and got into position prone .Id like to say it was a perfect clean shot but in the fading light he must of been a bit 3/4 on and the sound of a green hit followed by him running a few yards said it all .He died on the spot and the entry was good but the exit had the tell tail marlikngs on the inevitable green .Gralloched him and saw i had clipped the top of the stomach .First for a long time but no-one perfect ,even me . Lamping straight after as it was now dark .Managed 2 foxes and missed 2 Again Martin ,a cracking night out as usual .Down mine next mate Quote Link to post

Yokel Matt 918
Looks like a great evening out guys the situation could have been a lot worse with the buck FD and like you say, shoot enough deer and its going to happen sometimes. Looks like a nice six at any rate. Good foxing as well. I haven’t been out for ages - hopefully going to get ‘permission’ from the Mrs to get out this weekend sometime… if I’m a good boy Quote Link to post
