Guest Ditch_Shitter
Straw Dogs? Great film! I have it on DVD right here They used straw for bedding in Greyhound Kennels for generations, mate. Never seemed to find a problem with it. Now days they use shredded paper. I don't know why. I bed my 'stock on straw. They don't mind it. I also use dried out Juncas Rush. Just be sure to realise that straw is of such a nature that it can look fresh as daisys, on top, while actually hiding a thickening carpet of wet filth beneath. Change it regularly. And there's the biggest question: What will you do with the waste product? I too will be interested to read others, maybe more up to date and elightened comments Quote Link to post
maty j 6
if you have the space in your garden ds turn it into compost. all our chicken and ferret shit goes on there along with the grass clippings then when its fully rotted down goes back into use on the vegie patch which will make more food for the dogs and chickens and the cycle goes on. Guest Ditch_Shitter
'Space in my garden', Maty? I have about two acres of 'garden' available to me, mate. And I'm completley surrounded, on all sides, by open bog and farmland. I have no problems with my own stuff. Just considering that Hare Dogs with the Straw Dogs may not be quite so blessed. But, yeppers; Even I actually run an active Compost Bin. Does for my tea bags and veg clippings Quote Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,102
If your using straw mate then it has to be wheat straw like byron said .Barley straw contains the husks which can work their way into the skin .If you have any sort of drainage linked to the kennels then any straw is a pain .It will block up drains for a past time unless you are careful .Like its been said ,do not top up old bedding with new straw as this hides a filth below which at the very least will make your dog stink .Changed regular its a good bedding .My dogs are still on boards as I only bed when it gets colder .I tend to use blankets which can be washed out and changed regular . scouse moocher 0
used' to use straw in my kennels for all of my dogs, untill two greyhounds i had in where tearin fu*k out of their skin, ended up in a real bad way . . . vet said theyd picked up mites commonly found in straw and hay, so switched to shredded paper, still a pain in the arse to get out the drains but does the same job. Guest mucker
I won't use it found it causes eye problems which stopped when I stopped using it, I now use shredded paper or hay. are you sure its not the other way round leon... a farmer i used to get my straw from said dont use hay for the bedding as it will give the dogs greif... have to say i used straw for a bit and like you ..dogs ended up with eye problems although the vet ruled it out as a cause i changed to shavings good stuff.. BRYKAY 2
I ONLY USE THE STRAW WHEN IT GETS REALLY COLD BUT WAS TOLD BY MY VET THAT IF A DOG IS PISSING ON THE STRAW IT IS TOO COLD AND THIS IS HOW THEY WARM UP THE BEDDING, "COMBUSTION" SAME PRINCIPAL AS A COMPOST HEAP!! I FOUND THAT MAKING THE BEDDING AREA SMALLER HEIGHT WAYS (SO THE BITCH COULDNT STAND UP) THIS STOPPED HER PEEING ON THE STRAW, IT WORKED FOR ME BUT I ONLY KEEP BITCHES IN DONT KNOW IF IT WILL WORK FOR DOGS THO??? Pumper dog 0
Mine are on carpet in their beds during hot summer months have just put straw down for them in the last week, not too thick as the weather is beginning to vary a little! Come winter they get a real thick bed of OAT straw, the same as hunt kennels use for hounds, don't know why I'm afraid but if its worked for them for so long, it'll work for me! I do know its hard to get hold of I get mine from the only farmer that does it within a 15mile radius and he only does it to supply teh kennels! Quote Link to post
Sorley x 32
Use good wheat straw, avois stuff that has been baled damp as it will have mold in. Avoid Barley and hay straw as they have seeds, awns etc that can cause all manner of mischief. Quote Link to post
