merle24 61
a mate of mine has a saluki x greyhound 18months old. the dog is very sensitive i.e he's not very good with pain, not sayin he beats the dog or anything but if you knock him or if he nips his skin he dunt half yelp........ anyone else with this type of dog have the same problem? Common in saluki and saluki crosses my mates dog is the same, but when its on quarry its a different dog, its covered in scars on its legs chest ears and face ONLY throu coursing going through hedges, jumping fences and the dog doesnt bat an eyelid, but if you were to stand on its foot or raise youre hand to it she would tremble or wimper, sensative mentality, extreme huntng instinct and preydrive. Mine's the same, she comes back with gashes on her legs from chasing through bushes, brambles etc without complaining but look at her wrong, tap her or if my old cat looks at her she acts like she's been hammered and sometimes screeches - but not as often as she used to. That's why I say to anyone having problems with Salukis/crosses that you need to take a lot of time to build up a bond with them, and not to use any kind of pain-based punishment or training because as a breed (and of course there will be some exceptions) they don't take well to it and any work you have done bonding with them can be very quickly undone. I don't think the Saluki suits everyone, perhaps your mate would be better off with a less sensitive type of dog like a bull cross if its winding him up that much? Don't forget that Salukis were traditionally one of the few breeds of dogs bred to live with their owner, not to live in a kennel with limited time spent on them. Check out Wikipedia on Salukis, it is gives a good concise overview of them. Quote Link to post

I'm certainly not saying believe everything you read on there but some of it is written by people who do know their subject. Quote Link to post
