what battries do you use ?

i am just wondering what batteries you all use in your ferret finders & collars.

the reason i am asking this is because i got new batteries for my collar & finder on friday and after testing both of them to my satisfaction switched them off & removed the batteries.

last night i tested both collar and finder to make sure all was ok & they were and because i was going out this morning for the first time with the ferrets.

well this morning when we went out ferreting my mate seen 2 rabbits so we decided to try that warren.

it took all 20 nets & then we put 1 of my ferrets in. in no time at all he was out of another hole at the far end of the warren, so i put him in a different hole, again he reappeared.

so i decided to try the other ferret, put the collar on him (should have made sure it was working, but did not) and put him in. no problems with either of them entering the holes. but still no rabbits.

then after a while he never appeared so i decided to try the locator, when i switched it on nothing, no lights no sound nothing. getting a little panicked i decided to send the second ferret in again in hope he would move the first ferret on and he did. thankfully. but now i have no locator.

still no rabbits.

we decided to move on to another warren, fresh droppings and 5 nets used. we put the two ferrets down and they appeared out again from different holes. no rabbits again. we put them down one more time and shortly they had surfaced empty handed.

the lack of rabbits was not phasing us so we gave the ferrets a good drink and moved on again.i do have to say that just watching the ferrets bobbing in & out of the burrows was priceless and thoroughly enjoyable espically as this was their first outting.

third warren, 15 nets. no ferret finder (i no, a bit dodgy)

this was i big warren on a bit of a hill and in sandy ground.

so again the ferrets were put in and after a while reappeared. sent down different holes and then only 1 appeared. so i decided to hold on to him till the other came out. but he did not show.

about 20 minutes passed and no sign of the second ferret still no show.

very worried now i decided to take a risk and put the first ferret back in in the hope he would move the other one on. i put the now redundant collar on him so as i would no which was coming and going.

i put him in, a few minutes later he appears on his own from a different hole. so this went on for about another 15 minutes or so untill he had covered every hole.

very very worried now at the prospect of loosing my ferret, i put the ferret back in his carry box, lifted and packed away my nets and gear. and my friend that was with me had to go as well. so i was waiting on my own contemplating what to do, when all of a sudden the missing ferret came running out of one of the holes, he was all puffed up and jumping about like a lunatic (seemed to be very excited but not as much as me). he went over to my bag where i caught him, gave him a drink and locked him in my box. very glad to have him back. i'd say he was gone a good hour.

that was my first mornings ferreting, and the ferret loved it. no bunnys tho

ferrets 0 - rabbits 1.

any way i just want to know what kind of batteries you are all using for the locator & collar ??

and do you or are you able to touch the batteries that go into the collar ?? will touching the same batteries drain them as i have been told ??

touching them wont drain them

did you put the collar batteries in the wrong way round, its an easy mistake, or even the 9 volt in back to front, again easily done,

once you tried the locator and didnt get any beeps/flashes, did you try it again when the ferret reapeared

the ferret may have been further than 16ft away from you, a reason for no beeps or sound

if you had the unit working the day/night before, then its deffo not a fauly item, more likely batterys wrongly fitted, that'll be my guess

Were they cheap batterys? I bought a load from ebay for something like 10 for £2!! a while back and they were crap! Although they did last just a little longer than 24 hrs.

I would agree with stubby, batterys round the wrong way, or out of range.

Glad you got him back though.

You can get cheap battery's but just put the battery number in to e bay instead of searching for ferret finder batterys, always test them first and take spares for collar and locator, make sure you take them out when finished as leaving them in drains them,i think the new locator comes with a on/off switch......so its a personal choice really cheap ones that dont last as long or dearer ones that do.....the secret is to test them just before you go

I picked up some nice batteries from Maplins yesterday, £1.70 each and said to last 340 hours switched on time, now thats 42.5 days ferreting at 8 hours per time, if you look at the instuctions it gives you the types and makes of batteries you can use ;)

And its not how many rabbits you get, its about being out and watching your animals work, and seeing all the hard work you put into them paying off :D
