1st Graveyard shift report

As many of you know I was recently asked by the Church Parish Council to help out with the rabbit pest problem at a local Cemetary. I've been up twice there twice now.

My 1st night on site, I took 3 young ones, (my phone didn't have enough charge in it to get a pic!). They were all very small.

When I walked in and fastened my sign to the gate there were about 30ish at the far end.

By the time I had tuned around the numbers were down to about 6!

I laid my slip on the bench in the secluded section and began my approach into the old part, where I had seen them all.

I followed the hedge halfway down when a twig snapped and two adults sat up; I froze but the one closer to me (about 40 yards away) decided to leg it anyways, it went straight past the other adult and that took off after it.

The young ones and half grown stayed put, so I continued. I got to within about 30 yards and laid down, placed the crosshair on the head of the first young one and let the shot go, the target went staight over, kicked a couple of times then came to rest. I looked over to where the next (half grown) bunny had been sat to te right of the 1st that one was now nowhere in sight.

I laid up in the same place and waited for what seemed an age (about 20-30 mins) when out came a young one from a hole 5 or 6 feet away from the dead bunny. It hopped towards the lifeless bunny.

This one was almost front on to me and I placed the cross hair right at the corner of its left eye. slowly squeezed the trigger and the bunny immedialtly spun around while at the same time performing a backwards summersault. Not a twitch when it landed.

I continued to wait in my position for another 40 minutes and seeing nothing I looked around to my right and after seeing some at the other side of the cemy, I began a stalk using the headstones and bushes as cover. The light was fading very fast and a fair bit of cloud began to roll in.

I had the Ultrafire 300 attached to my scope (must move it to under the barrel) as I got to within 30 yards I again laid on the grass and placed the crosshair right under the ear just behind the bunnies left eye. Squeezed the trigger and down went another kit.

As the place became very dark I went back to the secluded section to see if there was any in that part. I tuned the light on and saw all these little shiney eyes take off into the treeline and hedgerow!

I then began a walk round the perimiter of the yard. Every time I shone the lamp, bunnies took off at speed. :(

These bunnies are extreamly lamp shy.

I thought they would have taken a bit of time to associate the lamp with danger?? but I guess as its different to what they are used to it is understandable they would bolt.

Went out again last night, but only got one shot off and missed!!

I am going to try a morning tomorrow and see if I fair any better.

My Phone will be fully charged!

Happy shooting guys

Nice one Phantom, maybe the ghosts have scared the rabbits :D Just keep walking around the place and you'll start to walk a certain way around the land where you'll have the advantage, and not the bunnies ;) but judging by the number of eyes, there's plenty in there :)

Get some pictures up mate, grave yards scare the s*it out of me. The last time i went in our local bone yard i got lost in a wood right on the edge of the place. i was stuck in there for a good hour going round in circuls. My batterys on my gun light ran out and as i got so far into the wood i compleatly lost my barings and found my self in a right state. The only reason i managed to get out is i spotted a solar garden light in the cemetery through the trees, people have started putting them on the graves so i knew if i did a half turn id be pointing in the direction of the quarry path that i was looking for but as i turned round there was a huge bramble bush infront of me up to the hight of my neck but that was the direction i had to go in so i set off through the brambles getting ripped to bits and tageld up but after about 5 minutes i got through it and climbed into a tree to get on the top of a wall and over it to get to the path i was looking for. What a f*cking relife that was when i found that wall lol. I walked through the front door and the missis said where the hell have you been you'v got brambles & and leaves all over you i replyed dont f*cking ask but in the end i told her and she just stood laughing at me then i had to see the funny side of it but guess what, i havnt been near that place since and dont f*cking intend to!!!

This graveyard aint big enough to get lost in, but its certainly earie (sp?)

The light from the torch reflects off the brighter polished stones and it looks sort of like a door opening inviting you into some of them :icon_eek:

A friend of mine back in the 80's was homeless for a while, he slept in a graveyard as he said "Its the safest place to sleep" because no one went in them at night. Makes sense I suppose
