Lovely pics Kay the cygnet hasn’t got long to go now. By the look of the leaves the husk is a sweet chestnut  atb john

The cygnets are spending more time on there own now , i just watched them today really but they seem to be getting more independent every week, will be sorry to see them go to be honest , been a good 6 months watching the parents & then the chicks

I hope the other pair on the lake have some next year , summat to do all year i suppose  i have found 11 cygnets in the village i live in so thats a few more to watch out for in coming years

can you do anything with sweet chestnuts , i found a bush loaded with elderberys as well but didnt pick any as i didnt know how to make anything with them

Don’t eat any thing until you have positively identified it have a look on Google and learn to tell the difference between the conker and sweet chestnut leaves. I’ve only hade them raw and roasted.

My Nan used to make elderberry and blackberry jam. and elderberry chutney I don’t know any of the recopies. hope this helps ;) atb John

Its definatly sweet chestnut, though i think it would be far too early to eat them. Indeed, the ones i have opened in the past have been no where near as big as the ones that i buy in winter from the street sellers. Some of those sweet chestnut trees i have seen look ancient...will take a pic when i visit them next........JD :)
