breeding rats as fert food?

Recommended Posts

I used to breed rats all be it not for ferrets but my snakes and id it a fair bit of faffing about with the feeding and cleaning of them as they will need a good balanced diet in order to have a healthy breeding stock. I also had rabbits and they are easier to breed as you can get the food for them anywhere and pound for pound ( weight and money wise ) they work out a lot cheaper and you have the added bonus that you have the odd one for the pot as well. That being said, you do need more space to breed wabbits, but if space is not a concern I would breed bunnies. There is another advantage that may not matter so much if you are using them for animal food, that they, wabbits that is, have more nutrients in them then rats have. I noticed that as when I switched from feeding rats to rabbits the growth rate of my snakes picked up big style even though they got the same weight of food per meal at first.

If you need more info on rat breeding give me a shout.

p.S. I do however have a recipe or two from Korea about how to prepare fried rat. ;)

A ferret owner "breeding" rabbits to feed his ferrets would probably be a first. A bit of a contridiction I suppose.

My brother once rented a three bedroom house. He slept in one room, kept his snakes in another and bred his rats in another. He used to freeze his surplus rats in bags of ten and give them to his local reptile dealer. When the brothers account was high enough he'd buy another snake or tank.

Escapees from both rats and snakes caused a bit of friction between him and his landlord, LOL.
