jac 12
IF you know what you are doing there is less chance of messing it up. But I would not encourage anyone to do it themselves , would hate it if a young person came on here and thought it OK do do it there self by reading these posts. They could get it badly wrong or leave it to late and then the pup suffers. That's why there was a law made. To stop any idiot from having a go.

farlap 19
Dont you have to get them micro chipped when you have the tales docked yes they must also have paperwork (signed cet from the vet who did it) and microchipped. Cant think of a good reason not to do it the legal way.

jon 0
Hi It is illegal to dock your own pups.It MUST be done by the vet and microchipped so that the docking and microchipping numbers correspond. There are more vets out there that will dock however most vets require you to be a longstanding customer and will request that you do not advertise the fact that they dock. Your vet will normally prefer to tell you face to face if they will dock and that if you telephone the practice will tell you that they do not preform this proceedure. IT IS FOR YOU TO PROVE THAT IT WAS DONE LEGALLY AND NOT FOR THEM IT WASN'T. A vet can even scan a docked dog for the microchipping which if has not been done legally can land the owner a lot of grief and hassle.
Guest sph1979
A mate had a litter of 11 patterdales by c section which cost £500, then the vet done the tails and chipped them which cost £495. only 5 of the 11 pups have survived. so for nearly £1000 he's has lost alot of money and alot of pups. He's gutted and broke lol Edited August 3, 2009 by sph1979

masmiffy 82
Guy I got a cocker from 12 years ago used to do all his pups himself. Then the 'ban' came in and he stopped. Back then, if caught illegal docking, the fine was over £1000! Try to find a friendly vet who isnt anti docking and plead the working dog bit with em!
red fell 0
yes Jac,the law says you cant but with a non pedigree who would know,i do all mine at three days old so whos to say that the bitch didnt bite them off or they were caught in the door or even that they were born like that, when they go to working homes the look the part, nothing looks as bad as a patterdale of fell or russell with a squirrel tail. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT YOU ARE LUCKY YOU HAVE THE OPTION US POOR SCOTS GET F****D ALL THE TIME I WOULD LOVE THE CHANCE TO TAKE PUPS TO THE VET TO GET THEM DOCKED .EARLIER THIS YEAR I WAS ON THIS SITE AND ASKED A YOUNG LADY IF THE TERRIER PUP SHE WAS SELLING HAD A DOCKING CERTIFICATE AS THE SITUATION I AM IN I WOULD NEED ONE SHE THEN ACCUSED ME OF NOT BEING INTERESTED IN BUYING HER PUP AND BANNED ME FROM SENDING HER A MESSAGE IF YOU CAN GET THEM DONE LEGAL THERE HAS BEEN PEOPLE PROSECUTED IN SCOTLAND ALREADY ATVB RED FELL
