ACEPACK 5 Posted July 21, 2009 Report Share Posted July 21, 2009 Yes it's finally happened to me after years of keeping dogs, The dreaded kennel cough started with my wee patterdale bitch 5mths old, Immedietely took her to the vet along with the Lakie and my Lurcher, Vet vaccinated all dogs and put them on course of Antibiotics which in fairness done the job with regards the lurcher and the lakie, However the wee patterdale bitch she just cant shake it of at all, been back to the vets again another jag and another course of Antibiotics and still it continues, finally went back to the vet yesterday again and said look it's not working help out here in fairness i have paid well over the £120 mark it not the money it's frustrating when you here the bitch in the morning crackling away!! My kennels are always spotless and i had worked in the cumbria area and had the strongest desinfectant you can get Sordene 5 which was used for the foot and mouth down there the Vet however has gave me Virkon which is meant to be the best on the market as she thought it might be dorment in the kennels which i find it hard to beleave, Anybody out there with any idea's would be much appreciated as it's driving me round the bend. sandymere 8,263 Posted July 21, 2009 Report Share Posted July 21, 2009 The Kennel cough is a virus and as such is self limiting but it sounds that your pup may have picked up a bacterial infection while it's defences/imune systems was comprimised. Once a dog has had a given strain of kennel cough, just like us with flu, it will not get it again so if there is any virus present it won't reinfect your dogs. If it is bacterial then antibios are the main option but check that the dog has other symptoms ie temp etc as sometimes the damage to the lungs can take a number of weeks to settle so a residual cough is not in it's self diagnostic of an active infection. Simple linctus cough mixture, rest, good food and time with as you say discussuon with the vet. Good luck s Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Grated ginger roots boiled up with some honey, strain it out and then put in food or instead of water, will help surpress it. Aaron Quote Link to post Share on other sites
