Davy Reminded me of this

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Just finished reading about Davy's session and the Magpie that jumped in from of his pellet while he was trying to Zero his scope. :clapper:

It reminded me of how I got into the hunting side of shooting.

When I was clearing my shed out earlier this year, a family of mice had set up home in the shed.

They had causes massive amounts of damage and I decided to sit in wait and shoot the bugger (didn't realise there was more than one at the time.)

I used my .177 ASI Sniper I put some of my Tench grounbait in front of a metal backstop (going by the mess they made of the bag I figured they must like it.)

1st time I put the crosshairs on its face after waiting almost an hour, I decided it was just too cute to kill and I aimed in front of its nose. Squeezed the trigger and watched as a puff of red dust rose and the mouse summersalted backwards and ran for its life. Well; I nearly wet myself laughing

Didn't see it again until the following night. Obviously the scare I gave it didn't have the desired effect. This time I gave it a name (Mr Carter, for personal reasons) and that enabled me to think of it as an ugly fecker I used to have to deal with in my last job.

I placed the Crosshairs on its head and squeezed the trigger.

It vanished but through the scope I could see fur stuck to the metal backstop. Feck I injured it :o or so I thought. I quickly made my way the 30 feet or so to the shed. Where I discovered that I had shot the little thing just below its right ear. The creature had made it a whole 8 or so inches away before it realised it was dead

The following day I decided to Zero my SMK .22 Cal Mod19 for the same range so I could do some knockover target plinking.

I still had a metal backstop which I had baited with some Jam to see if there were any mice left (I had taken a further 2 with mouse traps).

I was putting the bulls out with the .22 into my 'balistic putty backstop' when this little mouse pops it head out from behind the backstop and starts to climb up the metal (standing on its hind legs) to lick the jam  I couldn't believe it, broad fecking daylight cheeky little blighter.

Well after I got over the shock I decided it needed something a little more substantial than Strawberry Jam.

Well At first I thought I had scared the little begger to death until I moved my putty backstop as it just seemed to drop into a sitting position :icon_eek:

I went to investigate and was greated with this:

After I moved my backstop, I looked at the wound, well I can only describe it as being on par with sending a whole breeze block through a cow at high velocity.

Thats how I got into hunting after shooting on and off for 30 years.

Well I dont know what species it was but the ones in the shed made a hell of a mess, destroyed 2 wooden model boats, crap and urine spots all over the place.

According to the Rentokill site description it wasn't one of those with yellow fur on it and if it was, it would highly likely moved into the house at some point (got 6 of the feckers with traps in the kitchen near xmas last year) Apparently they love electrical wires.

Didn't think they liked talking about shooting any quarry over there.. :whistling:

You can legally take any vermin by any method, as long as it doesn't involve cruelty. Recommended and legal are two entirely different matters..
