Mickey Finn 3,087
the fellas round here run the bears like fox hunters run fox. it goes all day and doesn't often end w/ a catch. we get plenty of adolescents & older bears that walk, but only a few that really stand to on the ground. if a bear is walking it's because the dogs aren't biting him hard enough to get his attention. they're good jump dogs & run a track well but they just don't stop alot of bears no matter how many dogs get turned in. they could put more up the tree if they used rougher dogs like plott curs & black mouths or putting a touch of bull in a few pack hounds (the old timers who still do it reccommend at least 1/16 but no more than 1/4) but they don't like spending more in vet bills than they did on the dog. that sow was making short runs then slapping the hounds around when she stopped. she was also pushing an older cub in front of her. i got there late and turned in on the run. we got in front of the race as she broke into the open. the hounds (mostly walkers & plott HOUNDS) were nipping and pulling hair but not really biting down. got to see my bullXcur break the tree line and catch up as she stopped to fight. he hit her so hard it took her off her feet. he had her by the left side of her face. for 5-10 seconds he kept her off her feet by yanking her down every time she tried to get up. she finally got up & w/ him hanging off her she started climbing a big longleaf pine. about 15 feet up she stopped and pushed him off and put two big gashes in his right shoulder. then she went up the tree some more and sat on a branch. i'll have to see if i can find the pics i took of her up the tree. not very good though as they were taken w/ a cheap 35mm. at NO TIME while she was caught did any of the other dogs do any more than pull fur and jump back from a bear that couldn't touch them. had they caught like rough dogs will she couldn't have got up the tree or got my boy off her. it was all for the best though as she got to raise her cub & who knows how many more. when i've got more time & resources i want to run a pack of mixed curs & bullX and compare my catch rate to these guys. i already know i'll lose more dogs. Hey Pops, sorry, I know this is off topic. But that walking and slapping is pretty much what we get too. I guess since we hunt them in the fall before they go into the dens. Their so fat thats about all they can do! Good luck again! Quote Link to post
