Bradford Lad 74
Hi all, I'm thinking of taking up ferretting when i get back from my hols in a fortnight, i was just wandering if anyone would be good enough to help me with what equipment i will need and how much will it cost me? Here's what i've come up with already: 1. Ferrett = £10 2.Hutch = Free(kindly offered by SUPERTED off here) 3.Spade = £20 4.Carrying Box = ?? 5.locator = ?? Theres probably loads of totally obvious stuff i've missed Quote Link to post
The one 8,577
dont go mental and splash out a load of cash mate buy something once a month and you will have enough stuff to start come october ,see what the guys round about you use if you ferret clear fields you will get away with short long nets and not need a load of purse nets Quote Link to post
coursing mad 5
get some nets a lot of them, a box & coller will cost you around the 100 mark and i wouldnt pay 20 bob for a spade just get a cheap 1 and get it chopped down to size best a can doo. tom!! Quote Link to post
Bradford Lad 74
Cheers for the advice so far Quote Link to post
ferreter.al 22
alrite mate, you can buy a nice box off ebay for £15,if you go up to a gamefair you will buy some nets for about £1.50-£2 each or again there is loads of nets online for not a lot of money, collar and locator is around £120 which i would say is the most important thing and if you buy an adult ferret rather than a kit make sure if its a jill she has been brought out of season so you dont have any problems,if you would like a kit let me know.im in sheffield.atb Quote Link to post

Ron Weasley 83
Without wishing to be patronising, I think the most important thing you need to get is a bit of knowledge about ferrets and their welfare. 1. I'd definitely get two ferrets- they're sociable creatures that like company, and also when working, rabbits will very often give just one ferret the run around. 2. Decide whether to get hobs or jills. Most people prefer to work jills, but the best working ferret I've ever had is a hob. Personally I keep both but I have the set up for it. There are things to be aware of with both sexes though, all of which have been discussed at length on this forum before. Once you've got those things out of the way, then start looking around for equipment. Maybe a good idea to find someone willing to let you tag along with them when you first start, its an invaluable learning curve. Quote Link to post
para1 11
A shame you live so far away mate £5 or free for ferret a hob would be better if you only want 1, but pm me your address and I've got a few nets you can have. Quote Link to post
martindevon 0
if i was to start ferreting again ide get all of what you mentioned, but i would have to jills, and later on when you got a better set up get a vasectomised hob as you may not know they need to be mated every season, (i think thats right), other wise you will have to get them jabbed at the vets to bring them out of season.
