Ok, so with current kc standards appearing to ruin the breed or at least allow the bad points to be continually bred, surely now they aren't going to be getting crossed from all too often? With gsd being as name suggest a "shepherd" dog, wouldn't they still carry the stalking trait?
-
Dunno, I'm not sure they could handle the slop so can't be that much to say about them surely ?
-
Just been doing a bit of research as was interested. From what I've read they did, as you say, get very popular for a moment, but apparently weren't good enough to stand the test of time. Also they apparently have hip issues, which I can't imagine being wanted in a running dog. However, they supposedly did the business for a time. Forgot to mention that they apparently retain information better than most breeds so we're bred into the x for their brains

Funny thing is, within the last 5 minutes I've seen 4 posts on fb of this mix. So clearly I'm late to the party
-
Genuinely interested to know what adding those into the mix brings. I honestly know nothing of the breeds, birds clearly did their job so I'm sure he will educate and enlighten me

Forgive my ignorance but what is the gsd or mali bringing? Obviously the collie x grey is used by many for many things and seems like a decent way to go, is the gsd just adding bit more stamina? Or less hearding instinct? Top of my head all I can think is the mal just gives a bit more aggression?

The only thing he had to carry to the car was his gloves, so naturally when we got there he didn't have gloves. The spaniels nose if top notch and if there is something around she will find out. She also air scents which apparently not many cockers do but how accurate that is I don't know, she's done it from a pup. The lurcher hasn't learnt to hold back yet so tries to follow into cover, usually just getting in the spaniels way! Gsd x grey sounds an interest mix!

Thanks, this was his first day reaching the top so think will stick with me for some time.

With the weather currently against us to consider any kind of lamping, without fear of broken feet. Me and the lad took a trip to our very local mountain range (actually a hill range but I won't tell him just yet). The weather was poor and visibility was worse, but he loved every minute mooching with the dogs up the steep wooded hills, encouraging the spaniel into every bush that crossed our path. He exceeded expectations and against a backdrop of guns clapping from the estates shoot day, he made it to the hut at the top. Not much for the dogs, plenty of tracks but nothing moving. He's already

Yeah I'm currently watching about 50 books on their ebay store, trying to whittle it down based on recommendations but it's currently just a growing list ?
-
No mate I haven't, I'll add them to my list though and try find a book or two ? Cheers!
-
I like the sound of these, will see if I can find them. Thank you!

Cheers will have a look ?

I've seen "A moucher forever" and been told that's a good read but that's only book of Phil Lloyd I'm aware of. Quick search for Paul Dooley books has found 2, "stormy nights & frosty mornings" and "all born with a hunters instinct" any idea which is his first? Thanks.

I'll have a look cheers pal. Although not too fussed if I buy a rubbish book, got plenty of them on the bookshelf already, just not many country type books and Darcy is only author I'm familiar with, other than Plummer but a friend told me to read his books with an open mind. Will look for the loan library though. Thanks again!

So I've finally found some time to read of dogs and deer, now I'm nearing the end I'm starting to think of what to read next. Anything you lot would recommend? I've read the latest 2 darcy lurcher books, scooby and of D & D. Have been recommended "hare and the swifthound" but wondering what other suggestions might be. Doesn't have to be lurcher based, ideally hunting related but any hunting or country life book recommendations will be appreciated. More than anything just a decent & interesting read. Cheers.

?? just when I thought I was finally getting the hang of it.

Fair enough, my apologies if seemed like I was going off at you!

Possibly not, unfortunately I don't have it all figured out yet. She's still with me now and even if she doesn't get going and only fulfils her potential as a pot licker and not a pot filler she will still be with me, perhaps I should be sticking her on fb telling people she's "green" and "not seen much just a few runs". Try get a few quid off her and palm her off onto some other unsuspecting fool. Laugh at my questions if you must, I really don't mind, I honestly don't, I get that some people wouldn't keep a dog like this and I get why, and I truly understand that some will be reading this th

Cheers pal ?

I can assure you she has no golden Eagle in her.....that I know of! I'm assuming you read my original post and what I was hoping to get some advice on, it would also be fair to say that from your comment, I can say she's clearly not a natural, so I'll plod on with my un-natural, golden Eagle hybrid and hope she comes good. Like I've mentioned, be it foolish or not, I'm not going to be giving up on this dog. Thanks.

I've heard and also read about the rabbit of the North being easier to catch, my guess would be the the type of ground it calls home, how true it all is I couldn't say, I've also seen a few dogs around here that would catch decent numbers on a night, but not since late 90's early 2000's when I was out and about as a boy with my old man. Personally for me, if we caught 2 or 20 it was something I absolutely loved doing. They may not have been "the best" or seen by others as "top rabbiting dogs" but they certainly gave me some great memories.

I know a very small amount of lads with lurchers personally and they all live a decent drive away, going out with them not a problem, it would just be difficult to be out with them regularly, as I previously mentioned if I could get out with them 3 times a season then that would be good going, managed 1 night with them last year and she was keen enough to run/chase but not to make the kill, she just stopped the chase and happily let the other dogs do the kill, wouldn't even play with catch afterwards
-
I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but I can assure you if she does manage to make a catch ill be letting you all know since 99% of people who have commented of my various posts have been brilliantly helpful! ?
